لاdo not تَنظريlook اليومَtoday ياO سَلمىSalma إليّat me فماfor ... not
أَبقَىleft المشيبُgray hair بوجهيon my face نظرةَappearance البَشَرِhuman beings
Do not look at me today, Salma, for
Do not look at me today, oh Salma, for age
Gray hair has left no human semblance in my face.
Has left no trace of youth upon my face
جَنىwronged عليَّagainst me فقوليso say كيفَhow أَصنعُI deal فيwith
جانٍa wrongdoer إِذاwhen كانis يجنيdoes wrong غيرnot مقتدرِcapable
It has wronged me; tell me how I can deal with
It attacked me, so tell me what can I do
A wrongdoer, when it does harm and I am powerless?
Against a fate that shows me no grace?
عَراbefell فَأعرىand so stripped bare منَof الأوطارِdesires قاطبةًall
قهراًby force وألبَسَنِيand clothed me ماwhat ليسis not منamong وَطَرِيmy desires
It came upon me and stripped me of all desires,
Stripped bare, more naked than a newborn child
By force, and clothed me in what I did not desire.
It clothed me in what was not meant to be mine
وَقَدand indeed حَذرتُI was wary وَلَكنْand yet ربَّmany a مُغتربٍstranger
لمdid not أنجُI escape منهfrom it وإنْand even though حاذرتُI took precautions بالحَذَرِwith caution
And I had been wary, yet many a stranger
Though I took care, the fate of an exile
I did not escape, though I guarded myself with caution.
I could not escape, though I took care in time
فَإِنْso if شَكوتُI complained إلىto قومٍpeople مساكنهمْtheir dwellings
ظلّshade السَّلامةsafety ردّونيthey sent me back إلىto القَدرِfate
So if I complained to people whose dwellings lay
If I complain to a people whose homes
In safety's shade, they referred me back to fate.
Are shaded by peace, they drive me back to my fate
كونيbe كماas شئتِyou wish فيin طولٍlength وفيand in قِصَرٍshortness
فليسfor ... are not أيّامُdays شيبِgraying الرّأسthe head منpart of عُمُرِيmy life
Be as long or as short as you wish,
Be as you wish, in length or brevity
For the days of a gray head are no part of my life.
For the days of a white head are not of my state
فَقُلso say لِمَنto whoever ظلّkeeps يُسلِيoffers consolation عنfor مصيبتِهِhis affliction
لاno سلوةٌsolace ليَfor me عنfor سمعيmy hearing وعنand for بصريmy sight
So tell whoever keeps offering solace for his affliction:
Tell those who try to comfort my pain
There is no solace for me over my hearing and my sight.
I find no solace in hearing or in sight
شرُّthe worst العقوبةِpunishment ياO سلمىSalma علىupon رجلٍa man
عقوبةٌa punishment منfrom صروفvicissitudes الدّهرtime فيupon الشَّعَرِthe hair
The worst punishment, Salma, for a man
The worst punishment, oh Salma, for a man
Is punishment from time's vicissitudes upon his hair.
Is punishment dealt by the turns of time
إِنْif كانwas طالgrew long لهfor him عمرٌa lifetime فشيّبَهُand so turned him gray
فكلُّthen every طولٍlength عداهpassed it by الفضلُworth كالقِصَرِlike shortness
If his life has grown long and so turned him gray,
If his life was long and old age took his hair
Then any long span bereft of worth is like a short one.
Length and brevity fare equal in their blight
يُلينُsoftens منهof him ويُرخِيand loosens منof معاجِمِهِhis joints
كُرْهاًagainst his will ولوand even if كانhe were منحوتاًcarved منfrom الحجرِstone
It softens him and loosens his joints,
It softens him and loosens his diction
Against his will, even if he were carved from stone.
Unwillingly, even if he's carved out of rock
فإنso if تكنare وَخَطاتُflecks الشّيبgray hair منin شَعَريmy hair
بيضاًwhite فكمthen how much منof بياضٍwhiteness ليسis not بالغُرَرِforehead blazes
So if the flecks of gray in my hair are
If the steps of old age in my hair are white
White—how much whiteness is not a forehead blaze!
Not all whiteness contains a shining light
ماnot كلُّevery إشراقَةٍgleam للصّبحِbelonging to dawn فيin غَلَسٍpredawn darkness
وليسnor is كلُّevery ضياءٍlight منfrom سناradiance القمرِthe moon
Not every gleam in the predawn gloom belongs to dawn,
Not every dawn glow in the darkness of night
Nor is every light from the moon's radiance.
Is the radiance of the rising moon bright
