Did you not question the effaced ruin,
Did you not ask the ruined abode,
while you stood there, lingering?
While you were standing by it, confining it,

And I had known it smiling;
And it was once laughing with me,
so how did it turn into frowning decay?
How it turned with decay frowning?

And because you found it unfamiliar,
And because you denied it
with your eyes you kept feeling for it.
With your eyes you kept touching it.

And oh, would that, when I faced it,
Oh, would that when I met it
I had been effaced and had not seen it effaced.
I had decayed and not seen it decayed,

For many a gazelle I have seen there,
For how many gazelles did I see in it
wearing the garb of youth and love.
Wearing the garb of youth and passion!

Strolling coquettishly, and how many

In its bowers I do not like sighing!

May you be given quenching water, for often
You were watered with abundance for so long
you gave drink and quenched him when parched.
You watered it and made it flourish,

Upon you was like the slumber of youth.

And may the fangs of time never tear you apart,
And the fangs of time did not make you their prey
for long you were a knight against them.
For you were a horseman to them for ages.

seated aloft in your dwelling?
Sitting lofty in your precinct?

And he who was glory to the full moon
forever trod with the arch of his foot?
With his sole ever trampling it!

While I was infatuated with others.

So rise and look at my gloomy night!

but after him it has grown dry.
Then after it became withered!

I struck sparks from him and took his fire.

I went with it to the abode of decay
openly, and handed him to the burier.
Openly and I gave it the guide!
