Continued life—but if only it came without my reproaching it;
and a draught—but if only its taste were sweet to me.

I stepped beyond twenty, scoffing at youth;
but when it drew away from me, my sorrow for it doubled.

Ah, would that what youth left behind and passed over
swiftly, with all its ills, would never seek him out.

its cheer left me—had remained forever absent.

what, then, if its greater part spread throughout my head?

Time's hardship and its ease have taken turns with me;
and time's war and peace have schooled me.

destruction's gray steeds and black trot away with him.

He was once far from contending with death;
then his mother cast him into death's palm.

Hunger with honor befits a young man better,

a deed's sinfulness is enough to deter me from it.
