ومُنتَقِباتٍand veiled women بالجمالِin beauty أتَينَناthey came to us
وقدand already ملّhad wearied مِنّاof us كلُّevery راعٍcaregiver وعائدِand sickbed visitor
And women veiled in beauty came to us,
when every caregiver and visitor had wearied of us.
فقُلنthen they said وقدand already أنكرنthey found strange ماwhat بِيَwas in me مِنof ضَنىًwasting sickness
ماnot ترىyou see ماwhat lies بينbetween تلكthose الوسائدِthe cushions
Then they said, finding my wasting sickness strange,
“Look, you cannot see what lies between those cushions!”
فقلتُso I said وقلبِيand my heart واجفٌtrembling غيرُnot ساكنٍat rest
غراماًfrom passion ودمعِيand my tears سافحٌstreaming غيرُnot جامدِunflowing
I replied, my heart trembling without rest
from passion, and my tears streaming without pause:
وجدتُI have felt غراماًpassion ماnot تَجِدْنَyou women feel وماand not اِستَوىwas equal
بحاملto one bearing ثِقلٍa burden فيin الهوىlove غيرُone not واجدِfeeling love
“I have felt a passion you do not feel; there is no equality
between one bearing love’s burden and one who feels none.”
فملنَthen they swayed كماjust as مالتْswayed غصونٌboughs مريحةٌwind-stirred
يُضاحكنthey shared laughter with مِنّاat us حاضراتِthose present الولائدِthe maidservants
Then they swayed like wind-stirred boughs,
sharing a laugh at us with the maidservants present.
