ومنand out of سَفَهٍfolly لمّاwhen مررتُI passed علىby الحِمىthe protected grounds
بكيتُI wept وهلand can يُبكيmake weep الجليدَthe steadfast man المعالِمُthe landmarks
And out of folly, when I passed by the protected grounds,
When I passed the ruins, I wept, does ice weep for ruins?
I wept—can the landmarks make the steadfast weep?
I drank my tears when I saw its devotion,
شربتُI drank بهin it لمّاwhen رأيتُI saw خشوعَهits humbled state
دُموعيmy tears وغنَّتنيand sang to me عليهover it الحَمائِمُthe doves
I drank there, when I saw its humbled state,
And the doves sang to me about it,
my tears, while the doves sang to me over it.
When we saw the abandoned house of passion,
ولمّاand when رأيناwe saw الدّارَthe dwelling قفرىempty منof الهوىlove
وَليسَand there was not بِهاin it إِلّاexcept الرّياحُthe winds السَّمائِمُscorching
And when we saw the dwelling empty of love,
With nothing but piercing winds,
with nothing there but scorching winds,
We drank the torment in draughts, by the traces of its features,
كَرَعناwe quaffed الجَوىheartache صِرْفاًunmixed بأيديfrom the hands of رسومهاits traces
فلمso not ينجُescaped منّاof us يومon the day ذلكthat سالمُunharmed
we quaffed pure heartache from the hands of its traces,
That day none of us survived unharmed,
so not one of us escaped unscathed that day.
The hands of fate did not leave our place,
وَماand not برحتْleft أيديthe forelegs المطيّof the riding camels مكانَناour place
كأنّas though المطاياthe riding camels ماnot لهنّthey had قوائمُlegs
And the camels' forelegs never left our place,
As if the horses had no hooves,
as though the camels had no legs.
As if I never rebelled against overpowering love,
كأنِّيَas though I لمnot أعصِI defied الهوىlove وهوwhile it غالبٌprevailing
ولمand not يقلِsaid الأقوامُthe people إنّكindeed, you are حازمُresolute
As though I had never defied love while it held sway,
And people never said, you are decisive,
nor had people said, 'You are resolute,'
My day when passion leads me, I'm not tough wood,
ولمand not أكُI was صلبَstout العودِof timber يومon the day يقودنيleads me
أكفٌّhands شِدادٌstrong أوor نيوبٌfangs عواجمُtesting by biting
nor had I been stout of timber when I was driven
Savage fangs or ferocious claws,
by strong hands or fangs that tested my hardness.
If I have tears that lament my secret,
فَإنْso if يكُthere is ليfor me دمعٌtears بسرِّيَof my secret بائِحٌrevealing
فليthen I have مَنطقٌspeech للوَجْدِof passion مِنّيَfrom me كاتمُconcealing
So if I have tears that disclose my secret,
I have speech that conceals my passion,
then I have speech that conceals my passion.
By God, the day of parting, what crime did wishes commit against us,
فللّهso, to God يومُthe day الشَّعْبِal-Sha'b (the pass) ماwhat جنتِinflicted النّوىseparation
عليناupon us وماand what ضمّتْenclosed عليهaround it الحيازمُthe breasts
God, that day at al-Sha'b—what separation inflicted
That sorrows hugged unto them,
upon us, and what our breasts enclosed!
An evening we departed, led by love,
عَشيّةَat evening رُحناwe set out وَالغرامُand passion يقودناled us
وَليسَand there was not لناfor us إلّاexcept الدّموعُthe tears السّواجمُstreaming
That evening we set out, with passion leading us,
With only copious tears to aid us,
and we had nothing but streaming tears.
Galloping to love's call, as if we were,
نُطارُwe are sent flying إلىtoward داعيthe caller of الهوىlove فكأنّناso, as if we were
جيادٌfine steeds سراعٌswift ماnot لهنّthey had شكائِمُbits
We were sent flying toward love's caller, as though we were
Racing steeds without halters,
swift steeds that had no bits.
I looked, the living challenged the departed,
نظرتُI gazed وظعنُand the travelling women الحيّof the tribe تُحدىwere urged on by song بذيat Dhu النَّقاal-Naqa
وأيديand the forelegs المطاياof the riding camels بالحدوجِwith the howdahs رواسِمُstriding briskly
I gazed as the tribe's women in litters were urged on by song at Dhu al-Naqa,
As hands held the horses' reins taut,
and the camels' forelegs strode briskly beneath the howdahs.
Separation had ripped our group asunder,
وقدand already رثّgrew threadbare شملٌunion بالفراقِthrough parting وحولناand around us
منbecause of الوَجْدِlonging لَوّامٌa reproacher لناof us ولوائمُand female reproachers
Our union had grown threadbare through parting, and around us
Sorrows afflicted us and our companions,
were male and female reproachers, blaming us for our longing.
A time that fortitude failed, confused,
فلاهٍso a distracted one تخطّاهpassed him by التجلّدُfortitude مُفحَمٌspeechless
وساهٍand a heedless one توخّاهsingled him out التبلُّدُnumbness واجمُgloomily silent
So one distracted, whom fortitude had passed by, was speechless,
An era that stoicism sought in vain,
and one heedless, singled out by numbness, was gloomily silent.
Only detached eyes greeted me,
فَلَمso not تُلفِنيfind me إلّاexcept عيونٌeyes فواتِرٌlanguid
وإلّاand only خدودٌcheeks للعيونto the eyes نواعمُsoft
So only languid eyes met me,
And cheeks too delicate for eyes,
and cheeks soft to the gaze.
I was nurtured by youth until sated,
غُذينthey were nourished الصِّباyouthful passion حتّىuntil اِرتَوَيْنَthey drank their fill منof الصِّباyouthful passion
سنينَfor years كماas تغذوnourish الصبيّthe child المطاعمُfoods
They were nourished on youthful passion until they drank their fill of it,
As a child is nourished with food,
for years, as foods nourish a child.
With fingers that gesture to the woes of passion,
وَمُشتكياتٌand complaining women ليسَis not إلّاexcept أَناملٌfingertips
يشرنthey gesture إلىto شكوىthe complaint of النّوىseparation ومعاصمُand wrists
And complainants—nothing but fingertips
And arms that cling when passions rage,
and wrists, signaling the pain of parting.
A critic, how she responded to our separation,
وَنادمةٌand a regretful woman كيفhow اِستَجابتshe consented لِبَينِنَاto our parting
وقدand already شَقِيَتْsuffered بالعضّfrom biting منهاof hers الأباهمُthe thumbs
And a woman regretting how she had consented to our parting,
Though her censure wounded her lips,
her thumbs already sore from her biting.
They spurned us with their cheeks, what claim have we,
وَأَعرضَand turned away عنّاfrom us بالخدودِwith the cheeks وَماand not لَناfor us
إِلَيهنّagainst them لولاwere it not for بَغيُهنّtheir injustice جرائمُoffenses
And cheeks were turned away from us; we would have had no
Except their aversion is a crime,
offenses against them, but for their injustice.
I never feared that fickle hearts would seduce,
وَماand not كنتُI was أَخشىI feared أَنّthat قَلبيmy heart تَنوشهseize it
محكّمَةًempowered to judge فيناover us النّساءُthe women الظّوالمُthe unjust
Nor had I feared that my heart would be seized
Women arbitrary in judging us,
by unjust women, appointed arbiters over us,
Or that my longing ceaselessly stirs,
وَلاnor أَنَّthat شَوقيmy longing لاnot يزالceases يَهيجُهstirs it
nor that my longing would go on being stirred
A barren land or an abandoned dwellings,
by desolate earth or a timeworn dwelling.
