ويوم وقفنا للوداعِ وكلُّنا

ويوم وقفنا للوداعِ وكلُّنا

يُطَفِّحُ يومَ البينِ عينيه أدمعا

يُطَفِّحُ يومَ البينِ عينيه أدمعا

And on the day we stood to bid farewell, each of us

On the day we bid farewell, and everyone's eyes

made his eyes overflow with tears on the day of parting.

Were brimming with tears on the day of parting.

رأينا حُلوماً عارياتٍ ولم نجدْ

رأينا حُلوماً عارياتٍ ولم نجدْ

منَ الصَّبرِ إِلّا واهياً متقطّعا

منَ الصَّبرِ إِلّا واهياً متقطّعا

We saw minds stripped bare, and found

We saw bare wrists, and could find

no patience save what was frail and broken.

No patience, fragmented and feeble.

وَلَم تَسمع الآذان إِلّا تشاهقاً

وَلَم تَسمع الآذان إِلّا تشاهقاً

وإِلّا حنيناً يوم ذاك مُرَجَّعا

وإِلّا حنيناً يوم ذاك مُرَجَّعا

And the ears heard nothing but gasping sobs,

Ears heard only sobbing

and plaintive wailing, echoed on that day.

And yearning on that day of turning back.

فيا لك يوماً فاضحاً لمُتَيَّمٍ

فيا لك يوماً فاضحاً لمُتَيَّمٍ

ويا لك مبكىً للعيون ومَجْزَعا

ويا لك مبكىً للعيون ومَجْزَعا

So what a day, laying the love-stricken bare!

Oh what a day of exposure for the sufferer!

And what a scene of weeping for the eyes, and of anguish!

Oh what weeping of eyes and quaking of heart!

كأنّا وقد سلَّ الفراقُ عقولَنا

كأنّا وقد سلَّ الفراقُ عقولَنا

سلكنا جنوناً أو كرعنا المُشَعشَعا

سلكنا جنوناً أو كرعنا المُشَعشَعا

As though, with parting having stripped away our minds,

As if when parting addled our minds,

we had taken the path of madness, or drunk deep of wine mixed with water.

We embraced madness or drank turmoil.

كأنَّ عيوناً يُمطر الدَّمعَ هَدْبُها

كأنَّ عيوناً يُمطر الدَّمعَ هَدْبُها

غصونٌ مَطيراتُ الذَّوائبِ هُمَّعا

غصونٌ مَطيراتُ الذَّوائبِ هُمَّعا

As though eyes whose lashes rained tears

As if eyes raining tears in torrents

were branches, rain-drenched at their tips, streaming.

Were branches, heavily laden and showering.
