Ah, you lay sleepless at the light of lightning that flashed.
No sooner had its flash visited my eye than it passed.

And among afflictions is that your heart loves
one whose favor you have not won, though he is delight itself.

inventing grievances, reproaching, or turning away.

O God, our stand at the foot of Matali'—
lamenting separation: how it tormented and scorched!

and my heart wishes that he had not eased off.

Gray hair indeed came to me in the season of youth,
until, through it, I wore a youth of white.

When it arrived, it took nothing from me
of valor; it extended and broadened it against my foes.

It was as though I were a man changing
his garments: he disliked black, and so made them white.

O my two companions, console yourselves for the loss of those who do
good, for goodness among us has died.

Why do I see you, though aspiration lives within you,
content in this world with what should not be accepted?

If the meadow of rugged ground has beguiled you, then
what once was made verdant there has begun to wither.

Or if what Time's hand built for its people has beguiled you,
it is Time itself that demolished the building and tore it down.

For one repaid for a little of his modesty's water

The soul denies, then recognizes its right course;
so seek your cure from the hands of him who made you ill.
