وأنّand that دموعيmy tears لستI do not أملكcontrol رَدّهاholding them back
Ah, has word reached her of my grief since she is gone,
Alas! Has she come to know how I have grieved since her loss?
and that I cannot hold back my tears?
My tears I cannot hold back as they overflow.
تفيضthey overflow علىover عينٍan eye مَرىdrew forth الوجدُgrief ماءَهاits water

They spill from an eye whose waters grief has drawn forth,
They stream from my eyes when passion is aroused,
and which could not let patience overcome its grief.
And patience cannot overcome this fervent love.

Rich in the eyelids' rainstorms, as though it
Profuse are the tears that pour from my eyelids,
had reached one of the seas, which then replenished it.
As if some had reached the seas and replenished them.
وقدand indeed كنتُI had been منfrom قبلbefore الفراقthe parting أهابهُfearing it

Even before our parting, I had feared it,
Before we parted I feared her,
as the thicket's male ostriches feared its lions.
As a lion fears the darkness of nightfall.
وأُشفِقُand I am fearful ممّاof what لاno محالةَescape واقعٌwill occur

وهلْand is there? للمناياagainst death's decrees قادرٌone able أنto يردّهاrepel them
And I dreaded what would inevitably happen;
I dread the inevitable fate,
and can anyone repel the decrees of death?
For can death be averted?
كأنّيَas though I لمّاwhen أنْthat سمعتُI heard نعيَّهاher death announcement

When I heard her death announced, it was as though
When the news of her death reached me,
a cutter had settled upon my entrails and slit them open.
It was as if a quail had alighted upon my grieving heart.
وَلَمand not أَستطعْI could فيin رُزْئِهاthe calamity of losing her عَطَّrending مُهجتِيmy heart

وأجللتُهand I deemed it too great عنfor أنْto أُمزِّقI tear بُردَهاits mantle
In the calamity of her loss, I could not rend my heart,
In my misery, I could not rend my garment,
and deemed that loss too great merely to tear my heart's mantle.
But instead honored it by leaving it intact.
وَممّاand among what شَجانيgrieved me أنّنِيthat I لَمdid not أَجدfind لَهاfor her

And what grieved me was that I could not find for her,
What pained me most was finding no way,
despite my experience, anything to ease her loss.
Despite my experience, to lessen the pain of losing her.
وَأنِّيَand that I لمّاwhen أَنthat قَضىdecreed اللَّهُGod هُلْكَهاher death

And that, when God decreed her death,
When God decreed her death,
I was left alive after her, to my grieving heart's distress.
I was left behind, my heart still sorrowing for her.

The dawning day of her death bent my clan's mature men,
The day she passed was one of mourning for my tribe,
despite their fortitude, and grayed its beardless youths.
Bending over her bier with graying beards.
وحطَّand brought down الرّجالَthe men الشُمَّproud مِنfrom كلِّevery شامخٍlofty height

And it brought the proud men down from every lofty height,
It humbled the proud men,
with their hands touching the skin of the earth.
As they grasped the ground with their hands.
وَقَلّصand stripped away عَنهاfrom it العزّhonor ماwhat فُدِحتْit was burdened بهwith it

And the burden laid upon it stripped it of honor,
Honor shrank from her, though she was once surrounded by it,
so you would take its master, in his abasement, for its slave.
So that her master now seemed to her a servant in disgrace.

How many a burning liver is rent with grief,
How many hearts must burn with sorrow!
and how many a weeping woman's cheek has been ulcerated by tears!
How many tears must excoriate the cheeks!

Now that you are hidden from me, it is forbidden for me to look
It is forbidden, now that she is hidden from me,
upon any of creation, save with a glance I shall not cherish.
That I look upon people, except with glances I will never repeat.
وَسِيّانِand both are equal عنديto me أنْwhether حَبَتنيshe bestowed on me خريدةٌa secluded maiden

It is all the same to me whether a secluded maiden favors me
To me, the love of one who hopes for union
with a hoped-for union, or bestows her rejection on me.
Is equal to one whose love I've spurned.
وهيهاتand far be it أنthat أُلفىI be found أُرقّحُI tend carefully صَرْمةًa small camel herd

Far be it that I should be found tending a small camel herd,
Far from me is the thought that I could be consoled
and seeking ease from the abode of life.
By seeking the comforts and luxuries of life!
وَمِنand from أَينَwhere ليfor me فيin غيرهاanother besides her عِوَضٌa substitute بهاfor her

And where could I find, in anyone else, a substitute for her,
Where but in her can recompense be found?
when she alone had mastered the paths of virtue?
For she alone attained the heights of virtue.
أُسامُI am urged toward التسلِّيconsolation وهوwhile it عنِّيfrom me بمعزِلٍis far removed
وكيفand how تُسامُis charged with النّفسُthe soul ماwhat ليسis not عندهاin its possession
I am urged to find consolation, yet it lies far from me;
Solace evades me, remaining out of reach,
and how can the soul be asked for what it does not possess?
For how can the soul be solaced when she is not here?
وَبَينَand between ضُلوعيmy ribs ياO عَذولreproacher نوافدٌgaping wounds

And between my ribs, O reproacher, are gaping wounds
Yet within my chest, O censurer, are wounds
that reproach and rebuke refuse to close for me.
That refuse to be silenced by reproach and rebuke.
وَودّيand my wish بأَنّis that اللَّهGod يَومَon the day of اِختِرامهاher being snatched away

And I wish that God, on the day He snatched her away,
I wish that on the day we are brought together,
had snatched from between my sides what held love for her.
God would take from my side all that her love has stored within it.
وَإنِّيَand indeed I لَمّاwhen غالَهاstruck her down الموتُdeath غالنيstruck me down

And indeed, when death struck her down, it struck me down;
When death took her from me, it was as if it took me too,
so away with my soul, since God decreed her departure!
So a pox on my soul when God decreed her loss!
أَفيis there in? كلِّevery يومٍday أيّهاO الدّهرُTime نكبةٌa calamity

Is there, every day, O Time, a calamity
O Time, does each day and night bring a new calamity
that strains my ribs, so I must bear its strain?
That loosens the fetters binding me so I bear its burden?
بلغتُI reached أشُدِّيmy prime لاmay I not بلغتُhave reached وجزتُهُand passed beyond it

وَأعجلتهاand you hurried her away منbefore أنْthat تجوزَshe passes beyond أشُدَّهاher prime
I reached my prime—would that I had not!—and passed beyond it,
I reached maturity but did not attain maturity’s understanding,
while you hurried her away before she could pass her prime.
As she was hurried from me before she could reach her prime.
ففزتُso I gained بأَسنىwith the finest of ماwhat حَوَتْهُheld it رواجبِيmy finger-joints

So I gained the finest thing my finger-joints had held,
I gained the finest thing my aspirations held,
and, in the mother of all calamities, exceeded its bounds.
And surpassed in the mother of afflictions her due bounds.

So, O heart, why are you steadfast, as though
So my heart, why are you so hardened, as if
hopes were telling you that you might regain her?
Ambitions are conversing with you to reclaim her?

I never wished you to be patient today,
I did not wish that you would be stoic today
and for the clan's young men to call you its steadfast one.
While the youths of the tribe call you steadfast.
أَليسَis it not? فِراقاًa parting لاno تلاقِيَmeeting بعدَهafter it

Is it not a parting after which there is no meeting,
Is it not an eternal parting, without hope of reunion,
and the absence of travelers whose return is not expected?
An absence of travel with no wish for her return?
أَلاAh! فَاِلبَسthen wear الأحزانَsorrows لبسةَthe wearing of قانعٍone content

Ah, then clothe yourself in sorrows, like one content
Wear sorrow like the garment of a devoted worshipper,
with his garments, who seeks not to renew them.
Robed in his clothes with no desire to renew them.
وَصمَّand be deaf عنِto المغرينَthose urging بالصّبرِto patience إنّهمْindeed they

And turn a deaf ear to those urging patience; they
And fast from those who tempt you to patience - they
are quenching a fire whose blaze God has kindled.
Are kindling a fire God has fueled and lit.

And before you, Time overtook one clinging
Others before you sought blessings hanging
to Radwa's mountains, grazing there on their tender arak fruit.
On the mountains of bliss, grazing securely.

It kept a tryst on a lofty peak, watching for a raincloud
They would meet in the darkness fearing no suspicion
that pours down upon it, its draught made sweet by God.
And dreading no evil in the nights' machinations.
وَتَلقاهُand you find it خِلْواًcarefree لاnot يطالعkeeps watch for رِيبةًdanger

And you find it carefree, keeping no watch for danger,
But the disease of misery destroyed the gazelles of Suiqa
nor guarding against the nights' accidental blows or deliberate ones.
And scattered the beasts from the thickets of Tudmur.
وداءُand the malady of الرّدىdeath أفنىwiped out ظباءَthe gazelles of سُوَيقةٍSuwayqa

And the malady of death wiped out Suwayqa's gazelles,
It breached the kings' retreats and did not spare
and scattered Tadmur's dusky ostriches from its valley bends.
Their nobility, nor there did it curb its havoc.

And it penetrated the kings' screens, and did not fear
Each day and night it advances slowly upon them
their weapon-points, nor heed their gathered forces there.
Until it overtakes them in their neglect.

at a leisurely pace of its own, yet outstrips their rush.
Only to have ill luck make their fortune fade!

And how many a band has slept in the shade of happiness,
It destroyed what they had built up
only for it to snatch them away, or thrust ill fortune into their good luck!
And stripped them of what they had rendered strong.

And the one who had raised their edifice demolished them,
Greetings and mercy to the land of Tuff,
and the one who had secured their scabbard unsheathed them.
Whose provisions God beholds as He ignites its beacons!

Peace and mercy upon the land of al-Tufuf!
May its graves never lack, on any day or night,
May God draw forth its rain and kindle its fire-stick.
Sustenance from the gardens of God they obtain.

And may there never be lacking, each day and night,
So in it are many body parts of a people it made ready,
the bounty its graves receive from God's Paradise.
To give what they sought, to those who readied them.

How many people's remains He has prepared there,
By God, among them is a grave I came to willingly
to give them what they seek—He who prepared them!
And deposited my religion, then my life, within its hollow.
وَللّهِand God's is مِنهاamong them حفرةٌa grave جئتُI came طائعاًwillingly

And God's is a grave among them, to which I came willingly,
I turned away, brushing the soil off a hand
so I laid my faith, then my worldly life, in its burial niche.
That brushed away the dust of the tomb and its façade.
وولّيتُand I turned away عنهاfrom it أنفضُshaking off التّربَthe earth عنfrom يدٍa hand
نفضتُI shook off ترابَthe dust of القبرِthe grave عنهاfrom it وزندَهاand its wrist
And I turned away from it, shaking the earth from a hand;
Nothing consoled me except that my neighbor,
I shook the grave's dust from it and from its wrist.
God decreed, would be laid to rest beside her.
ولمand not يُسلِنيconsoled me شَيءٌanything سِوىexcept أنّthat جارتِيmy neighbor

And nothing consoled me save that my neighbor
When I cracked open her tomb
was ordained by God to dwell beside her grandfather after me.
Before the martyred witness of God, I fulfilled my vow.

And indeed, when I dug her grave,
How can she fear evil on the day of her reckoning,
beside God's martyr, I fulfilled the promise to her.
When she has made of God's warriors her troops?
وَكيفَand how تَخافُshe fears السّوءَevil يومَthe day of حسابهاher reckoning

And how could she fear evil on the day of her reckoning,
On the Day of Resurrection she will grasp
when she has drawn her army from the armies of God?
The fold of a people who do not care about her limits.
وَتُمسِكand she holds fast فيon يومِthe day of القيامةِResurrection منهمُamong them

And on the Day of Resurrection she will hold fast, among them,
They will defend the One who granted them His support,
to the waistband of people who heed not its severity.
And pardon her faults however He deemed fit.

They shield whoever is loyal to them today from its heat,
and freely give him its coolness, as he wishes.
