    A tenderly reared gazelle has settled in that covert.

    Hearts defied patience in their love for him.

    Over him the dignified man's forbearance ebbed, and ran dry

    the wells of judgment; the wise man was made to stumble.

    O dwelling worn by the nights' wild tempests,

    while my love for its dwellers remains fresh.

    And beauties found repose in you, until

    calamities drove them away from me and you.

    How often fair women made gardens of your hills,

    and they flowered, though the age was barren.

    And clouds strolled over you, trailing

    striped mantles the south wind had chosen.

    وَأَلَنْتَ الفُؤادَ وَهوَ صَليبُ

    My eyelid watered your soil, though it was a rainless cloud;

    and you softened the heart, though it was hard.

    Poor would be my faith to your dwellers if I shed

    tears from my eye that did not stream down.

    كلّ شَيءٍ في كَرِّهنّ سليبُ

    You are not alone among all the nights have ravaged;

    everything is despoiled in their recurring rounds.

    O you who have come, bringing vengeance

    for a heart wronged by absence.

    Though distance has carried your person away,

    you are near within my heart.

    Had a sturdy she-camel I saddled borne what is in my heart,

    weariness would stop her short of the young she-camels' reach.

    Do not pardon me if I sell another a love

    that an ardently loving soul has devoted to you.

    A character with delicate edges, and an honor

    so lofty that flaws have never drawn near it.

    The days have refined it, and the worthiest character

    among us is guarded and veiled.

    Far-reaching glory stretched my arm toward you,

    and good soil, and a noble root,

    زِ طويلُ الكِرام عنها رعيبُ

    and lofty virtues encompassing the heart of glory;

    even a towering nobleman is daunted before them.

    ما بِخَلْق سواك فيه نصيبُ

    My passion, as you have known it, is pure;

    no creature other than you has any share in it.

    وَجَلاهُ الزّمانُ وَهوَ قَشيبُ

    The ages have straightened it, yet it is still supple;

    and time has polished it, yet it is still fresh.

    May those days be watered by recurring showers

    of my love, pouring in torrents from my eyelids.

    Grant me nearness; distance has wearied me,

    and sustain this rising—the setting has lasted long.

    If you find me yielding to the reins, there is in the heart

    of my time a throbbing from my fire's heat.

    How could I surrender my heart's youthful passion to time,

    while my resolve keeps watch over my desire?

    What pleased me in it has grown cheap in my eyes,

    as though youth in it were gray old age.

    قَلّما يُعجب العَجيبَ عجيبُ

    My experience has drawn curtains over my smile;

    rarely does a marvel impress the wondrous one.

    ما أُبالي في أيّ حينٍ تنوبُ

    And my experiences have shielded me from calamities;

    I care not at what hour they strike.

    I have tested time so thoroughly that, should I doubt,

    I would surely uncover what the unseen conceals.

    ما تمارَوا فيهِ إليَّ حبيبُ

    People do not know what my passion is for;

    what they debate is dear to me.
