قادَتْshe led حِرانِيَmy stubborn resistance يومon the day of النَّفْرِdeparture خُرعُبَةٌa tall, supple woman
وضلَّand vanished عنِّيfrom me ماwhat أُوتيتُI had been given منof جَلَدِfortitude
A tall, supple woman bent my stubborn will on the day of departure,
and all the fortitude I had been given deserted me.
قضتْshe made an end عليَّof me ولمand did not تعمدْintend it بنظرتهاwith her glance
وكمand how often أصابَstruck صميماًa vital spot غيرُone not معتمدِtaking aim
She slew me with her glance, though she did not mean to;
and how often has one struck a vital spot without taking aim!
كأنّماas though مهجتِيmy soul والبُزلُand the full-grown camels مُرحلةٌsaddled
مطيعةٌobedient للنّوىto separation فيin ماضِغيthe two jaws of أسدِa lion
It is as though my soul—while the full-grown camels stand saddled,
obedient to separation—were in a lion’s jaws.
فليتنِيso, if only I ساعةًfor a while أشكوI complain of صبابتهاlonging for her
سرّاًsecretly إِلَيهاto her ولاand not أشكوI complain إلىto أحدِanyone
If only, for a while, I could complain of my longing for her,
to her in secret, and complain to no one else.
