A greeting to the one who has settled in the land of the Hijaz,

for there is no recourse but a greeting of peace.

And may a streaming shower of rain never cease,

its skirts trailing across his hills.

May the hands of calamity never seize his dwelling,

nor may any eye behold him with tears pouring.

I love a camping place in the Hijaz; winds have blown in gusts,

east and north, bearing its fragrance toward us.

I seem, since I parted from him, through longing—

though counted among the healthy—to be ill.

This is not from love of the dwellings; rather,

the one dear to me among them is where a dear friend dwells.

Little is my gift to the one at the valley bend:

my passionate love—yet after parting, is anything little?

And my longing for him is stored away; no

speech reveals it, nor does a reprover sever its strands.

And ears other than mine heed reproach concerning him,

and others' minds are barren of love for him.
