جُدتَ وَالعَيشُ ما حِلُ

جُدتَ وَالعَيشُ ما حِلُ

كُلُّ ما فيهِ ذابِلُ

كُلُّ ما فيهِ ذابِلُ

You gave generously while life was barren,

You were generous when life was enjoyable,

everything within it was withered.

Everything in it was fresh.

فَغَدا وَهوَ بِالغِنى

فَغَدا وَهوَ بِالغِنى

أَخضَرُ العُشبِ آهِلُ

أَخضَرُ العُشبِ آهِلُ

So, through wealth, it became

Then tomorrow came while being rich

green with grass and peopled.

The grass became faded.

وَتَفَضَّلتَ بِالحُلى

وَتَفَضَّلتَ بِالحُلى

وَالأَماني عَواطِلُ

وَالأَماني عَواطِلُ

And you graciously bestowed jewels,

You were generous with jewelry

while hopes were unadorned.

And hopes were vain.

فَتَيَقَّنتُ أَنَّهُ

فَتَيَقَّنتُ أَنَّهُ

لَيسَ لِلحَيِّ قاتِلُ

لَيسَ لِلحَيِّ قاتِلُ

So I became certain that

So I was certain that

there is no slayer of the living.

There is no escape from death for the living.
