    Today, O possessor of pride and glory,

    is a day unlike those before and after.

    Sweet among the hours is [unclear wording],

    amid dew, lightning, and thunder.

    ما لَهُما نِدٌّ وَسَوى النَدِّ

    And there are two dishes we have cooked;

    they have no equal save nadd incense.

    And a remnant of qanbarīs has

    superiority over shīrāz and butter.

    مِن سَحَرٍ عَبَأتُهُ وَحدي

    And a platter holds whatever one desires;

    I stocked it alone, beginning before dawn.

    Its olives are blacker than my estrangement,

    and its cheese is whiter than my affection.

    نورِدُ مِنهُ مُضعَفَ الوَردِ

    And we have fried sambūsaj for you;

    we serve a doubled helping of it.

    لَو كانَ دُرّاً كانَ في العِقدِ

    And after this, we have narcissus;

    were it pearls, it would be in a necklace.

    And wine which, if it were ambergris,

    would be attributed to India.

    And a singer—you drink, thanks to the beauty of what

    you hear from him, in unclouded good fortune.

    And I have nothing besides this; so if

    you are content with little, then be my guest.
