مَنone who لَمdid not يَذُقtaste طَعمَthe taste of رَفدِهِhis bounty أَحَدُanyone
The sweetness of praise is unknown
The sweetness of praise none can know
to one whose bounty no one has tasted.
Save he who has tasted the food of its flow;
فَإِنso if تَكُنyou should be تَشتَهيyou desire الثَناءَpraise فَجُدthen be generous
تَجِدyou will find ثَناءًpraise كَأَنَّهُas though it were الشُهدُhoney
So if you desire praise, be generous;
Would you have your name on all lips and all hearts,
you will find praise as though it were honey.
Praise God, and you'll reap praise in plenty and parts.
فَالشُكرُfor gratitude ماthat which لاnot تَنالُهُyou obtain it بيدٍwith a hand
إِنif لَمdoes not تَنَلreceive عِندَكَfrom you النَوالُbounty بَدُunclear as written; likely 'a hand'
For gratitude is something you cannot gain with a hand,
For gifts unbesought are gifts doubly sweet -
if no hand receives bounty from you (final word uncertain).
The pathway to praise is to kneel at God's feet.
