الجَوُّthe sky فيin مُصمَتِهِits plain cloth وَخَزِّهِand its silk-and-wool fabric
وَالرَوضُand the garden فيin حَريرِهِits silk وَقَزِّهِand its raw silk
The sky is robed in its plain cloth and silk-and-wool fabric,
And the garden in its silk and raw silk;
وَالزَهرُand the blossoms بَينَbetween لَمحِهِtheir glancing وَغَمزِهِand their winking
وَالقَطرُand the rain بَينَbetween رَكضِهِits galloping وَنَقزِهِand its leaping
And the blossoms alternate between glances and winks,
And the rain between galloping and leaping;
وَالماءُand the water قَدhas قَرمَطَwritten in tiny, close-set letters خَطَّthe script of حِرزِهِits amulet
فَالبَسso wear مِنَof اللَهوِpleasure أَرَقَّthe finest بَزِّهِits fabric
And the water has traced its amulet's script in tiny letters.
So put on pleasure's finest fabric,
إِذاwhen الثَرىthe earth أَظهَرَreveals ماwhat فيin كَنزِهِits treasury
وَاِهتَزَّand sways فيin أَعلامِهِits ornamental bands وَطُرزِهِand its embroidered borders
When the earth reveals what lies in its treasury
And sways in its ornamental bands and embroidered borders.

For the greatest loser in the market of his own weakness
Is he who sells his life's sweetness for its bitterness.
