O you whose well of friendship

    is clear, unclouded by fickleness,

I have a portion left for this evening—

bringing it out is just the thing—

    of young Syrian birds,

that my seeking alone has espied.

The servant boy took them early to

    a blaze glittering with flame,

and brought them back from it, now

    clad in saffron-dyed garments.

    طِ وَخَردَلٌ صافي الرُضابِ

    And sausages, shriveled in

    stature, and mustard with limpid nectar;

    and cold dishes: laden are

    their jars with rue's embroidery.

    لَةَ وَالمُخَلَّقَةَ الإِهابِ

    Among them, dishes with musk-perfumed

    tunics and saffron-perfumed skins;

    and pickles, growing tipsy

    in every transparent-veiled jar:

they cure hangovers, and anyone who suffers

from yellow bile as I do.

    And homemade fermented relishes,

    as though brewing dissolved musk.

If you are content, you will spare us

    the smell of kebab smoke.

And we have an old woman whose acquaintance

with youth lies far in the past.

    Grape-born, her deeds

are far removed from every fault.

    She always endears herself

    by wearing crowns of bubbles.

A virgin, like the excuse that

    reproach's camel-driver leads forth.

And we have a skilled singer,

    his strings ringing with clamor.

Calling on me is his habit,

    and enfolding him is mine.

If his singing comes forth freeborn,

I make him master of my chosen bondage.

And our almonds and our lote-fruit

have the taste of shunning abstention.

And we have three; we have not hunted

    joy among them by force.

So, by the pride that dew's camphor

shows there over the musk of mist,

    do come in youthful spirit,

to make amends for youthful dalliance.

So I have now set out the situation,

and explained it to you in my letter.

So when it arrives and you have read it,

then be the answer, without an answer.
