ياO مَنyou who رَأىsaw ذُلّيmy abasement لَهُbefore him فَاِستَقدَراand so gained power
اِنظُرlook إِلَيَّat me فَقَدfor indeed بَقيتُI have remained مُحَيَّراbewildered
O you who saw my abasement before you and gained the upper hand,
O you who saw my humiliation as power
Look at me, for I remain bewildered.
Look at me, for I remain confused
داعَبتَنيyou toyed with me بِيَدَيكَwith your two hands تَجذِبنيyou draw me بِهاwith it
فَإِذاthen when اِنجَذَبتُI was drawn in تَرَكتَنيyou left me مُتَعَثِّراstumbling
You toyed with me with your hands, drawing me with them;
You teased me with your hands, pulling me towards you
then, when I was drawn in, you left me stumbling.
Yet when I stumbled, you left me fallen
فَإلىso until مَتىwhen أَناI فيin عِقالِthe fetter of صَبابَتيmy ardent yearning
غِنif (apparently a typo for إن) رُمتُI sought سَهلاًsmooth ground مِنfrom هَواكَyour love تَوَعَّراit became rugged
So how long must I remain in the fetters of my yearning?
How long will I be in the shackles of my youth
If I seek smooth ground in your love, it turns rugged.
If I was once undemanding of your love, now all rugged
لَوif كانَthere were ليfor me صَبرٌpatience يَفوتُpasses beyond بِيَwith me الهَوىpassion
ماnot كُنتُI would be أَرضىcontent أَنthat أَكونَI should be إِلىtoward وَراthe rear
If I had patience that could carry me beyond passion,
If I had the patience to resist desire’s passions
I would not be content to remain behind.
I would not be satisfied to be left behind
