ياO مَنyou who إِذاwhen حالwavers أَخٌa brother لاnot يَحولwaver
وَمَنand you who عَلىover الدَهرِTime بِهِthrough him نَستَطيلwe prevail
O you who never waver when a brother wavers,
O you when a brother is in need and cannot help himself
And you through whom we prevail over Time,
And we rely on you to carry us through time
عارَضَناbefell us بَعدَكَafter you ماthat which شَرحُهُits account
إِذاwhen اِختَصَرناهُwe abridge it عَريضٌbroad طَويلlong
In your absence, something befell us whose account,
After you left, we faced endless troubles
Even when we abridge it, is broad and long.
Brief when told but long when endured
وَنَحنُand we فيat ساعَتِناour hour هَذِهِthis
بَينَamid فِصادٍbloodletting وَدِماءٍand blood تَسيلflows
And we, at this very hour,
And now in this moment
Are amid bloodletting and flowing blood.
Between clashing swords and blood spilt
وَدارُناand our house مِنbecause of طيبِهاits pleasantness جَنَّةٌa paradise
لَوif only أَنُّهُthat it كانَwere بِهاin it سَلسَبيلSalsabil (a heavenly spring)
And our house, so pleasant, would be a paradise,
Our home was once a paradise
If only Salsabil were within it.
If only water flowed through it still
فَإِنso if تَفَضَّلتَyou show generosity عَلَيناtoward us بِهاwith it
فَهِمَّةٌthen a resolve حُسنىexcellent وَرَأيٌand a decision جَميلfine
So if you kindly bestow it on us,
So if you would be so kind as to grant us this
That would be a noble resolve and a fine decision.
A noble intention and sound advice
أُحيِrevive بِهاwith it المَوتىthe dead وَلاand do not تَغفَلَنever neglect
عَنهُمabout them فَفيهِمfor in them لَكَfor you أَجرٌa reward جَزيلbountiful
Revive the dead with it, and do not neglect
Revive the dead, do not neglect them
Them, for in them lies a bountiful reward for you.
For in them lies abundant reward for you
لاdo not تَمنَعِdeny الرَيَّthe quenching of thirst عِطاشاًthe thirsty فَماfor there is no
مِنany مَورِدٍwatering place إِلّاexcept that إِلَيهِto it سَبيلa path
Do not deny the thirsty their fill, for there is
Do not forbid the rain from the thirsty
No watering place without a path leading to it.
For all paths lead to it in the end
وَهَذِهِand this جُملَةُthe summary ماwhat عِندَناwe have
وَحَسبُناand sufficient for us اللَهُGod وَنِعمَand how excellent الوَكيلthe Trustee
And this is the sum of what we have to say;
This sums up what we have to say
And God suffices us—what an excellent Trustee!
God is all we need, the best Guardian
