    فَلَيسَ يُحِلُّهُ غَيرَ الوَفاءِ

    O you who defended the sanctuary of brotherhood,

    For none but loyalty dwells within it;

    And you who answer, as is your custom in giving,

    When one desperate with hope calls upon you.

    One with a garden of memory came to me,

    From which the fruit of song is plucked:

    A gazelle, with a brow beneath his forelock,

    Like the dawn of union in the night of estrangement.

    And we were there, bewildered,

    So jugs of water came to us there.

    And that was because I, when we had arrived,

    Brought whatever food was ready.

    Then, as I walked, I suffered a mishap with a glass jar,

    Struck by the evil eye for its clarity.

    بِعَثتُ إِلَيكَ فَوهاً مِن ثَنائي

    And I have dispatched a mouthful of wine;

    I have sent you a mouthful of my praise.
