ياO موقِظَawakener of العَتبِreproach الَّذيthat هُوَit is راقِدُasleep
حَتّامَhow long توقِدُyou kindle مِنهُfrom it ماwhat هُوَit is خامِدُextinguished
O you who awaken the reproach that lies asleep,
O you who rebukes dormant reproach to rekindle what lies extinguished
How long will you rekindle what lies quenched within it?
Had you ruled justly you would not have judged against me while my opponent has no witness
لَوif كُنتَyou were تَعدِلُjudge fairly فيin الحُكومَةِjudgment لَمnot تَكُنbe
تَقضيrule عَلَيَّagainst me وَماwhile there is no لِخَصمِيَfor my adversary شاهِدُwitness
If you were fair in judgment, you would not
You sided with my enemies so my hands are limp; does the hand strike or the arm assist?
Rule against me when my adversary has no witness.
You left my face a mosque, dusted by tears bowing in its direction
ساعَدتَyou aided أَعدائيmy enemies فَقَدso indeed شَلَّتwas paralyzed يَديmy hand
هَلcan تَبطِشَstrike forcefully اليَدُthe hand أَوor يُعينُالساعِدُthe forearm lends aid
You aided my enemies, and now my hand is paralyzed;
By the truth of the head of our betraying brother, if there was even one letter of what's been said
Can the hand strike, or the forearm lend its aid?
Do you doubt the pure gold while you and I are the assayers?
وَتَرَكتَand you left وَجهيmy face مَسجِداًa mosque فَمُعَفَّرٌso one dust-stained
فيat قِبلَتَيهِits two prayer-directions مِنَamong الدُموعِthe tears وَساجِدُand one prostrate
And you left my face a mosque, with one dust-stained
O frightened boy, fear not if you believe I am your father
And another prostrate among the tears at its two prayer-directions.
You who made your hearing a blessing so the slanderous envier anchors by it
فَوَحَقِّso, by the sanctity of رَأسِthe head of إِخائِناour brotherhood قَسَماًswearing بِهِby it
إِنnot كانَthere was مِمّاof what قيلَwas said حَرفٌa letter واحِدُsingle
So, by the sanctity of our brotherhood's head—I swear by it—
And drew from your sword's scabbard a sharpened one while my mouth is silent to rebuttal
Not a single letter of what was said is true.
And robbed the necklace of our love's cordiality so it became without your necklaces
أَتَشُكُّdo you doubt فيin الذَهَبِthe gold الَّذيthat هُوَit is خالِصٌpure
أَنّيthat I am وَأَنتَwhile you are الصَيرُفِيُّthe money-changer الناقِدُthe discerning assayer
Do you doubt the pure gold
So turn back from estrangement whose summer is free while the spring of reunion is cold
That I am, when you are the discerning money-changer?
And tie the evening meeting to your hand so I come on the steeds of dread
ياO أَيُّهاyou الوَلَدُthe child المُخَوَّفُthe frightened one لاdo not تَخَفfear
إِنif كُنتَyou are توقِنُare certain أَنَّنيthat I am لَكَto you والِدُa father
O frightened child, do not fear,
If you are certain that I am a father to you.
أَنتَyou الَّذيwho صَيَّرتَyou made سَمعَكَyour hearing مَبرَكاًa camel's kneeling-place
حَتّىuntil أَناخَmade his camel kneel بِهِin it العَذولُthe reproacher الحاسِدُthe envious one
You are the one who made your hearing a camel's kneeling-place,
Until the envious reproacher made his camel kneel there.
وَسَلَلتَand you drew مِنfrom أَسيافِthe swords of سَبِّكَyour abuse مُرهَفاًa keen-edged blade
وَفَميwhile my mouth لِماضيfor the keen blade of الرَدِّthe rebuttal عَنهُagainst it غامِدُsheathing
And you drew a keen blade from the swords of your abuse,
While my mouth keeps the keen blade of answering it sheathed.
وَسَلبتَand you stripped جيدَthe neck of الوُدِّaffection حَليَthe ornaments of سَلامِناour greetings
فَغَداso it became وَلَيسَand there are no عَلَيهِon it مِنكَfrom you قَلائِدُnecklaces
And you stripped affection's neck of the jewels of our greetings,
So it has come to wear no necklaces from you.
فَاِرجِعso turn back عَنِfrom الهَجرِestrangement الَّذيwhich لِمَصيِفِهِfor its summer
حُرٌّheat (contextual reading) فَطَلُّfor the dew of رَبيعِthe springtime of وَصليmy union بارِدُcool
So turn back from estrangement, whose summer
Is hot, for the dew of my union's spring is cool.
وَاِربِطand bind عَلىupon يَدِكَyour hand اللِقاءُthe meeting عَشِيَّةًone evening
فَأَناfor I عَلىon خَيلِthe horses of الجَريدَةِthe cavalry detachment وارِدُarriving
And bind the meeting to your hand one evening,
For I shall arrive on the cavalry detachment's horses.
