مُحَسِّنُ بِنُ المِلكِ شَرُّ بَلى
لَهُhe has أَخٌa brother جُملَتُهُhis whole being خَيرُgood
لَهُ أَخٌ جُملَتُهُ خَيرُ
Muhassin ibn al-Milk is the worst of afflictions.
He has a brother whose whole being is good.
مُبَخَّلٌdeemed miserly إِنif سائِلٌa beggar أَمَّهُsought him out
مُبَخَّلٌ إِن سائِلٌ أَمَّهُ
قالَhe said لَهُto him ماnot فيin العَصاthe staff سَيرُa leather thong
قالَ لَهُ ما في العَصا سَيرُ
Branded a miser—if a beggar seeks him out,
he says to him, “There is no leather thong in the staff.”
