If there is a loaf of bread in my house,

Then that day, to me, is a wedding day.

But if my hand falls short of it through poverty,

I turn it back to the sustenance of consolation.

Nor have I trailed the hem of the robe of seeking aid,

Even if hunger drags my body to my grave.

For death is easier than being in a position

Where I expose myself to begging.
