إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle الوَعدُthe promise خافَfeared مِنَof المِطالِdelay in fulfillment
إِذا ما الوَعدُ خافَ مِنَ المِطالِ
عَدَلتُI turned بِهِwith it إِلىtoward حَرَمِthe sanctuary of النَوالِbounty
عَدَلتُ بِهِ إِلى حَرَمِ النَوالِ
If ever a promise fears being drawn out,
Whenever the promise fears delay,
I turn it toward the sacred precinct of bounty.
I turn it toward the sanctuary of bounty.
وَكَمand how often أَحلَلتَyou brought بِالإِعدامِamid destitution مالاwealth
وَكَم أَحلَلتَ بِالإِعدامِ مالا
يَسَرُّone is gladdened بِهِby it عَلىaccording to مِقدارِthe measure of حاليmy circumstances
يَسَرُّ بِهِ عَلى مِقدارِ حالي
How often, through daring, have I won wealth
And how often you have brought wealth amid destitution,
that brings delight in measure with my means.
Bringing joy in keeping with my circumstances.
فَجَرِّبنيso test me تُجَرِّبyou will find by testing أَريحِيّاًa magnanimous man
فَجَرِّبني تُجَرِّب أَريحِيّاً
يَروحُhe goes forth in the evening وَيَغتَديand goes forth in the morning بَينَamong المَعاليthe heights of honor
يَروحُ وَيَغتَدي بَينَ المَعالي
Put me to the test: you will find a magnanimous man,
So test me: you will find a magnanimous man,
who goes forth, evening and morning, amid lofty deeds.
Who goes forth evening and morning among the heights of honor.
لَوif أَنَّthat خِصالَهُhis qualities كانَتwere نُجوماstars
لَو أَنَّ خِصالَهُ كانَت نُجوما
لَمّاwould not اِحتاجَتhave needed إِلىto السُرجِthe lamps اللَياليthe nights
لَمّا اِحتاجَت إِلى السُرجِ اللَيالي
If his virtues were stars,
If his qualities were stars,
the nights would have no need of lamps.
The nights would have no need of lamps.
