إِذا لَم تَلحَقِ الكَرَمَ المَساعي
لَحِقتُI caught up بِهِwith it عَلىupon الهِمَمِaspirations السِراعِswift
لَحِقتُ بِهِ عَلى الهِمَمِ السِراعِ
If endeavors fail to catch up with generosity,
If exertion cannot reach excellence
I catch up with it through swift resolve.
I will reach it with lofty determination
وَإِنand if لَمnot يَتَّسِعbe ample أَدَبٌlearning فَزُرنيthen visit me
وَإِن لَم يَتَّسِع أَدَبٌ فَزُرني
تَجِدyou will find مِنّيin me أَخاa possessor of أَدَبٍlearning وَساعِample
تَجِد مِنّي أَخا أَدَبٍ وَساعِ
And if learning is not ample, visit me:
And if culture cannot accommodate me
You will find in me a man of ample learning.
You will find in me a cultured and generous brother
فَتىa young man إِنif أَعوَزَlack الوُرّادُwater-seekers مَرعىًpasture
فَتى إِن أَعوَزَ الوُرّادُ مَرعىً
فَأَنغُمُهُthen his melodies المَوارِدُwatering places وَالمَراعيand pastures
فَأَنغُمُهُ المَوارِدُ وَالمَراعي
A young man—if water-seekers lack pasture,
O youth, if the meadows lack pasturage
