أَرىI see الدَهرَthe age يَبساًbarren ground لَيسَdoes not يُنبِتُbring forth مُنعَماًone blessed with bounty
فَأَينَwhere, then أَشيمُI look for القَصدَthe goal وَالعُشبُand the grass مُعوزُscarce
I see the age as barren ground that brings forth no one blessed with bounty.
I see time barren, bearing no fruit,
Where, then, shall I seek my goal, when grass is scarce?
Where can I graze, when the grass is scarce?
إِلىto اللَهِGod أَشكوI complain أَنَّthat مِثلِيَone like me ضائِعٌneglected
يُقاسيstruggles with أُناساًpeople وَعدُهُمtheir promise لَيسَis not يُنجَزُfulfilled
To God I complain that one like me is neglected,
To God I complain that the likes of me are lost,
struggling with people whose promise goes unfulfilled.
Enduring people whose promises are never fulfilled.
إِذاwhen أَناI حاوَلتُtry اللِحاقَattaining بِرِفدِهِمto their bounty
رَجَعتُI turn back لِعِلميbecause I know أَنَّنيthat I عَنهُof it أَعجِزُam incapable
When I try to obtain their bounty,
When I try to catch up with them,
I turn back, knowing I cannot attain it.
I know for sure that I will fail.
إِذاif بُخلُstinginess قَومٍa people لَيسَthere is no بِهِon it صَنيفَةٌedging
فَبُخلُهُمthen their stinginess مِنalong جانِبَيهِboth its sides مُطَرَّزُembroidered
If some people's stinginess has no edging,
When misers are stingy without discrimination,
then theirs is embroidered along both its sides.
Their stinginess is embroidered on both sides.
