قَدindeed قُلتُI said إِذwhen عاتَبَنيhe reproached me جَليسيmy companion
لَمّاwhen رَأىhe saw داريmy house بِلاwithout مَلبوسِa garment
I said, when my companion reproached me,
When my companion reproached me
when he saw my house without a garment
For seeing my house so unfurnished -
مِنof كِلَلٍbed curtains تَصلُحُare suitable لِلعَروسِfor the bride
قَدindeed قَنَعَwas content اللَيثُthe lion بِهَذاwith this الخيسِthe thicket
of bed curtains fit for a bride:
No fine things fit for a bride within -
The lion has contented himself with this thicket.
I said to him, "Sir, my master,
ياO سَيِّديmy lord أَنتَyou وَياand O رَئيسيmy chief
عِمارَةُfurnishing الدارِof the house خَرابُruin الكيسِof the purse
O you, my lord and my chief,
'Tis a lion that contents himself
furnishing the house is the ruin of the purse.
With this most mean and humble lair."
