تَقَطَّرتُI tumbled عَنfrom ظَهرِthe back of الرِضاfavor وَلَطالَماand many a time
تَقَطَّرتُ عَن ظَهرِ الرِضا وَلَطالَما
بَلَغتُI reached عَلَيهِupon it الوَصلَunion وَهوَwhile it was بَعيدُfar away
بَلَغتُ عَلَيهِ الوَصلَ وَهوَ بَعيدُ
I have fallen from Favor’s back, though many a time
I tumbled from the back of favor, and many a time
astride it I reached the mire, however far away.
I reached union riding it, though union lay far away.
وَلَولاand were it not for التَجَنّيunjust blame الحَزنُharsh ماnot كانَwould جَريُهُits running
وَلَولا التَجَنّي الحَزنُ ما كانَ جَريُهُ
يَقِلُّdiminish وَلاnor كانَwould العِثارُstumbling يَزيدُincrease
يَقِلُّ وَلا كانَ العِثارُ يَزيدُ
But for cruel injustice, its pace
Were it not for harsh, unjust blame, its running would not
would never slacken, nor would its stumbling increase.
Slacken, nor would its stumbling increase.
فَمَنso who ليfor me بِإِنصافٍwith fairness إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle رَكِبتُهُI mount it
فَمَن لي بِإِنصافٍ إِذا ما رَكِبتُهُ
لَحِقتُI attain بِهِthrough it ماwhat أَشتَهيI crave وَأُريدُand I desire
لَحِقتُ بِهِ ما أَشتَهي وَأُريدُ
Who will grant me justice? Whenever I mount it,
Who, then, will grant me fairness, so that, when I mount it,
by it I shall reach what I yearn for and desire.
I attain through it what I crave and desire?
