أَحسِنhow fine! بِفِعلِis the deed of الحَسَنِal-Hasan بنِson of جَعفَرِJa'far
إِذاwhen مَرَّhe passed بِالمَرأىbefore the eye الأَنيقَelegant المَنظَرِin appearance
How fine is the deed of al-Hasan ibn Ja'far!
When he passed before the eye, lovely to behold,
فَجاءَand he came أَبهىmore splendid مِنthan ثَرىmoist earth مُنَوّرٍin bloom
مُوَشَّحٍdecked بِأَصفَرٍin yellow وَأَحمَرِand red
And came more splendid than earth in bloom,
Decked in yellow and red,
مِثلَlike الغُلامِthe youth فيin القَباءِthe outer robe المُشَهَّرِbrightly patterned
أَوor كَالعَروسِlike the bride فيin الحَلىthe ornaments وَالجَوهَرِand jewels
Like a youth in a brightly patterned robe,
Or like a bride in ornaments and jewels.

When his face appears to the beholder,
It distracts him from spring's radiant face.

O you who hold some of the fresh rose's essence,
Vaunt yourself over unsealed, heady musk;

For you are more fragrant than a breath of ambergris,
In the beauty of what flows in the buyer's palm,
أَصفىpurer مِنَthan العَيشِlife لِمَنfor one who لَمhas not يَهجُرِparted

Purer than life for one who knows no separation.
I shall repay with radiant praise,
فَعَلَdid الثَرىthe earth عَلىtoward السَحابِthe cloud المُمطِرِrain-bearing
الأَبلَجِthe radiant-faced one بنُson of الأَبلَجِthe radiant-faced one المُستَبشِرِglad-hearted
As earth has done for the rain-bearing cloud—
The radiant one, son of the radiant, glad-hearted,
فَتىًa youth مِنَfrom القَومِthe people الكَريمِnoble العُنصُرِstock
مُطَهَّرٍpurified يُنمىis traced in lineage إِلىto مُطَهَّرِone purified
A youth from a people of noble stock,
Purified, descended from one purified,

وَمُستَقَلٍّand deeming little لِلنَدىregarding bounty المُستَكثِرِthought abundant
Who deems small even a gift thought great,
And deems little even bounty thought abundant.
إِنif عُدَّare counted أَبناءُthe sons of العُلاeminence وَالمَفخَرِand glory
فَإِنَّماthen it is only نَعُدُّهُwe count him بِالخُنصَرِon the little finger
If the sons of eminence and glory are counted,
Then it is on the little finger that we count him.
