Her soul’s Judgment Day came at my departure;
Her soul arose for my soul
Indeed, separation is the Judgment Day of souls.
The dew is the resurrection of souls
غَيداءُa slender, graceful woman غاداهاvisited her in the morning فِراقيmy parting بِالأَسىwith sorrow
وَأَذاقَهاand made her taste البُرَحاءُintense anguish وَشكُimminence بَراحيmy departure
A slender beauty—my parting visited her in the morning with sorrow,
She went away, so my separation grieved her
And my imminent departure made her taste intense anguish.
And the wind of departing pained her
فَبَكَتso she wept فَصارَso became الدَمعُthe tears فيupon وَجناتِهاher cheeks
مِثلَlike الحَبابِthe bubbles عَلىupon كُؤوسِgoblets الراحِwine
So she wept, and the tears upon her cheeks became
So she wept, and her tears on her cheeks
Like bubbles upon goblets of wine.
Were like drops on cups of wine
فَكَأَنَّand so, as though صَفحَةَthe surface وَجهِهاher face لَمّاwhen بَكَتshe wept
رَوضٌa garden تَرَصَّعُwas studded وَردَهُits roses بِأَقاحِwith daisies
And so the surface of her face, when she wept, was like
And when she wept, her face appeared
A garden whose roses were studded with daisies.
As a garden adorned with flowers
