أَتىcame زائِريmy visitor مَنthe one who لاnot أَزالُI cease to be لهto him عَبداa slave
غَزالٌa gazelle لَهُhe has لَحظٌa glance يَصيدُhe hunts بِهِwith it الأُسداthe lions
He whose slave I ever remain came to visit me,
My visitor came, to whom I remain ever a slave,
A gazelle who hunts lions with his glance.
A gazelle whose glance can catch even a lion.
فَماso not زِلتُI ceased أَسقيهِI give him drink الَّتيthat which (the wine) اَناI دائِماًalways
أُصَيِّرُI turn نَسرينَwhite eglantine الخَدودِthe cheeks بِهاwith it وَرداroses
So I kept giving him the wine with which I always
I kept giving him the wine that I always
Turn the cheeks’ white eglantine into roses.
Turn into two rosy cheeks.
فَلَمّاand when اِغتَبَقناwe drank evening wine أَقبَلَcame الصُبحُthe dawn ضاحِكاًsmiling
فَصَيَّرَand made مِسكُmusk اللَيلِof the night كافَورَهُits camphor نِدّاa rival
And when we had drunk our evening wine, dawn came smiling,
When we embraced, the dawn came laughing,
And night’s musk made dawn’s camphor its rival.
And turned the musk of the night into camphor and ambergris.
