He was radiant with a temple-lock and cheek,
With cheeks like roses pink upon cream skin
Like a khurrim blossom above a rose,
And lips like cherries over petals soft
وَطُرَّةٍand a forelock وَجَبينٍand a brow
كَمِثلِjust like وَصلٍunion وَصَدِّand rejection
And a forelock and brow,
With brows like crescent moons that gently arc
Like union and rejection.
And straight nose like a sword in sheath aloft
ظَبيٌa gazelle يُميتُkills وَيُحييand gives life
مِنهُfrom him بِقُربٍthrough nearness وَبُعدِand distance
A gazelle who kills and gives life,
A gazelle whose glance both kills and vivifies
Through nearness to him and distance from him.
Whether close or distant, my heart is lost
قَدalready شابَhas turned gray رَأسيmy head مِنهُbecause of him
ماwhat lies بَينَbetween هَزلِjest وَجدِand earnestness
My head has turned gray because of him,
For him my hair turned grey, my feelings tossed
Between jest and earnest.
Between jest and earnest, longing and pain crossed
