زارَنيvisited me مَنthe one who خَلَعتُI cast off فيهِfor him عِذاريmy bridle (restraint)
وَفُؤاديand my heart عَلىon شَفاthe brink of الاِنتِظارِanticipation
He for whom I cast off my bridle visited me,
The one for whom I had shed my modesty visited me
While my heart was on the brink of anticipation.
While my heart was on the verge of waiting
فَتَرَشَّفتُso I sipped مِنfrom ثَناياهُhis front teeth خَمراًwine
فَضلُهاits virtue أَنَّهاthat it بِلاwithout خَمّارِa wine-seller
So I sipped wine from his front teeth,
So I sipped wine from his cheeks
Its virtue was that it came without a wine-seller.
Its excellence being it was without a veil
وَالدُجىand night's darkness بِالصَباحِwith morning يُبديshows اِختِلاطاa mingling
كَاِختِلاطِlike the mingling of العِتابِreproach بِالإِعتِذارِwith apology
And night's darkness showed a mingling with morning,
And the darkness at dawn reveals a blending
Like the mingling of reproach with apology.
Like the blending of reproach and apology
