نَوالُbounty ماnot لِرَيِّضِهِfor its unbroken steed وَثُوبُa leap
وَبِشرٌand cheerfulness ماnot لِراكِدِهِfor its dormant state هُبوبُa stirring
Bounty whose unbroken steed never leaps,
The sand that is trod bears no fruit,
and cheerfulness whose stillness never stirs;
The wind brings no hope to the stranded boat.
وَجاهٌand influence إِنif شَرَحتُI explained القَصدَthe purpose فيهِin it
لَنائِبَةٍfor a calamity فَمَرعاهُthen its pasture جَديبُbarren
and influence—if I explain what I seek from it
Rank is useless when truth tastes bitter,
to face a calamity—its pasture is barren;
Its pasture deserted, no longer green.
وَبابٌand a door إِنif سَحَبتُI dragged إِلَيهِtoward it بُرديmy mantle
فَحاجِبُهُthen its gatekeeper لِحاجِبِهِfor his brow قُطوبُa scowl
and a door—if I drag my mantle toward it,
A door I knock, seeking refuge in vain,
then its gatekeeper has a scowling brow.
Its sentry blocking entry secure.
فَلاso do not تَقدُمcome forward عَلىupon سَمعيmy hearing بِعَذلٍwith reproach
فَلَيسَfor it is not يَطيبُbecome sweet طَعميmy flavor أَوuntil تَطيبُyou become sweet
So do not approach my ears with reproach,
Reproach not my hearing with excuses vain,
for my flavor will not grow sweet until you do.
Neither savory nor sweet can my taste remain.
