وَراحٍand wine تُريحُrelieves الروحَthe soul مِنof تَعَبِweariness الهَمِّcare
بَعَثتُI sent بِهاwith it كَرخِيَّةَof Karkh الأَبِthe father وَالأُمِّand the mother
And wine that relieves the soul of the weariness of care—
A breeze that relieves the soul of the burden of worries
I sent it, of Karkh on both its father's and mother's sides,
I sent it like the tenderness of father and mother
مُعَتَّقَةًaged تَخفىeludes عَنِfrom الوَهمِimagination رِقَّةًin delicacy
وَلَمand not أَرَI saw شَيئاًanything قَطever يَخفىeludes عَنِfrom الوَهمِimagination
Aged, so delicate that it eludes imagination;
Freed and hidden from fancy is its softness
And never have I seen anything elude imagination.
Yet I've never seen anything hidden from fancy
فَلَوfor if لَمnot يَكُنhe were مِنamong أَكرَمِthe noblest الناسِpeople مَذهَباًin conduct
لَماthen not كانَwould have been ماwhat أَهدَيتُI gave as a gift مِنof ذَهَبِgold الكَرمِthe vine
For had he not been among the noblest of men in conduct,
Had he not been the most generous in manner
What I gave would not have been of the vine's gold.
I'd not have sent what I did of his golden generosity
