وَمُنَعَّمٍ نادَيتُهُ مُتَعَرِّضاً

وَمُنَعَّمٍ نادَيتُهُ مُتَعَرِّضاً

يا بَدرُ ما أَبهاكَ ما أَضواكا

يا بَدرُ ما أَبهاكَ ما أَضواكا

And I called to a pampered beauty, making advances:

I called out to a benefactor, addressing him impertinently:

O full moon, how beautiful you are, how radiant!

"O full moon, how beautiful you are, how radiant!"

فَسَطا عَلَيَّ وَقالَ تَجبَهُني بِما

فَسَطا عَلَيَّ وَقالَ تَجبَهُني بِما

لَم يَبدُ مِن أَحَدٍ إِلَيَّ سِواكا

لَم يَبدُ مِن أَحَدٍ إِلَيَّ سِواكا

Then he lashed out at me and said, “You affront me with something

He frowned at me and said, "Don't compare me

That has never come to me from anyone but you.

To something no one but you has suggested."

البَدرُ يَصلُحُ أَن تُشَبِّهُني بِهِ

البَدرُ يَصلُحُ أَن تُشَبِّهُني بِهِ

حاشا لِوَجهِيَ أَن يَكونَ كَذاكا

حاشا لِوَجهِيَ أَن يَكونَ كَذاكا

Is the full moon fit for you to liken me to it?

The full moon deserves to be compared to you -

Far be it from my face to be like that!”
