And a woman with tyrannous hips and an oppressed waist,

With carnelian cheeks and a silvery mouth,

Gave me a bride to drink, whom she had clothed in a bottle,

And sewed her, with water, a necklace of pearls,

Beside a garden proud of its cypresses, as though they were

Handmaidens summering in their thin green robes.

So, by drinking, I rendered her all her due,

Until, through her, the angel of drunkenness claimed my soul.
