وَلَيلَةٍand a night لَيسَthere is not لَهاfor her مِثلُan equal
لَمnot يَكُwas فيin الدَهرِtime بِهاwith her بُخلُstinginess
And a night without equal—
Time was not stingy with her.
أَبرَزَهاbrought her forth مِنfrom خِدرِهاher secluded chamber عاتِقاًa maiden
بِمَفرِقٍwith a hair-parting إِكليلُهُits crown الوَصلُunion
He brought her forth from her secluded chamber, a maiden,
With union crowning the parting of her hair.
فَاِقتَضَّهاthen deflowered her عَيشِيَmy life مِنfrom بَعدِafter ماthat

Then my life deflowered her, after
Delay had embittered it with exile.
زُفَّتwas brought as a bride بِماwith what أَمَّلتُهُI had hoped for it حالِياadorned
وَكانَand it was عِنديin my view أَنَّهاthat she عُطلُunadorned
She was brought as a bride, adorned with what I had hoped for,
Though I had thought her unadorned.
وَكانَتand she was الزَوجَthe wife الَّتيwhom لَمnot أَكُنI was
وَأَطمَعُand I hoped فيهاfor her وَأَناand I البَعلُthe husband
And she was the wife I had never
Hoped for—and I was the husband.
فَيالَهاso, how wondrous she is! مِنof لَيلَةٍa night صارَcame to be ليfor me
مِنَof المَسَرّاتِthe joys بِهاthrough her نَسلُoffspring
So, what a night! I gained
Through her a brood of joys.
