وَلَيلٍand a night جَلاهُillumined it البَدرُthe full moon فيin ثَوبِthe robe of نورِهِits light
وَفيand on جيدِهِits neck عِقدُa necklace of الكَواكِبِthe stars يَلمَعُglitters
And a night the full moon illumined in its robe of light,
And on its neck a necklace of stars glittered.
تَمَتَّعتُI took pleasure فيهِduring it مِنfrom غَزالٍa gazelle مُهَفهَفٍslender
بِماin what لَمnot أَكُنI was فيfor ذَرَّةٍa speck مِنهُof it أَطمَعُI hope
That night I enjoyed, with a slender gazelle,
What I had not hoped for even a speck of.
وَعاقَرتُهُand I drank with him راحاًwine كَأَنas though حَبابَهاits bubbles
كَواكِبُstars of دُرٍّpearls فيin الزُجاجَةِthe glass تَطلُعُrise
And I drank wine with him, as though its bubbles
Were stars of pearl rising in the glass,
إِلىuntil أَنthat تَبَدّىappeared الصُبحُdawn كَاللَيلِlike the night سَلَّهُdrew it
مِنَfrom الغِمدِthe sheath فيamid نَقعِthe dust of الكَتائِبِthe battalions أَروَعُa gallant warrior
Until dawn appeared, like night drawn forth
From the sheath amid the battalions’ dust by a gallant warrior.
