وَعاشِقand a lover باحَconfided ليto me بِماwhat باحاhe confided
إِذwhen راحَhe went مِنfrom وَجدِهِhis longing بِماwith what راحاhe went
And a lover confided to me what he confided,
As he went, bearing what he bore of longing.
فَقُلتُso I said فيin مَعرِضٍa manner of speaking أُمازِحُهُI tease him
فيهِin it وَماthough not كُنتُI had been قَطُّever مَزّاحاa habitual jester
So I said, in a manner meant to tease him,
Doing so though I had never been a jester:
ياO ناقِصَdeficient in الحَظِّluck فيin مَحَبَّتِهِhis love
مَنِwhoever اِشتَهىcraved الراحَwine لَمdid not يبَقُلsay (apparent typo) آحاAh!
“O you whose luck is scant in love,
Whoever craves wine does not cry ‘Ah!’”
