وَصَديقٍand a friend سُرورُهُhis joy بِالصَديقِin the friend
كَسرورِlike the joy العَشيقِof the lover بِالمَعشوقِin the beloved
And a friend whose joy in his friend
And a friend whose joy is in the friend
is like a lover’s joy in the beloved.
Is like a lover's joy in the beloved
I go in the evening مِنهُfrom him وَأَغدوand go in the morning
بَينَamid لَفظٍspeech رَطبٍtender وَخُلقٍand a nature رَقيقِgentle
Each day I leave him, evening and morning,
Each day with him my soul takes flight and alights
amid tender speech and a gentle nature,
Between gentle words and refined manners
وَخَريفٍand an autumn مِنَof الوَفاءِfaithfulness نَضيرٍverdant
وَرَبيعٍand a spring مِنَof الحِفاظِloyal devotion أَنيقِlovely
and a verdant autumn of faithfulness,
An autumn of fidelity beyond compare
and a lovely spring of loyal devotion.
A spring of graceful loyalty
فَقَضىso may He render اللَهُGod حَقَّهُhis due مِنsuch a نَفيسٍprecious soul
يَقتَضيdemands of نَفسَهُhimself قَضاءَthe discharge of الحُقوقِobligations
So may God render him his due—such a precious soul,
So God has taken his due from my soul
who demands of himself the discharge of obligations.
That now takes its due from other souls
