مَضحَكٌa smiling mouth أَحلىsweeter مِنَthan الشهدِhoney

A smiling mouth sweeter than honey,
Its coolness makes hail needless.
بِتُّI spent the night حَتّىuntil الصُبحِdawn أَلثِمَهُI kiss it

I spent the night till dawn kissing it—
Of a guileless youth with bewitching grace.
وَنُجومُand the stars اللَيلِof the night ضاحِكَةٌlaughing

And the stars of night were laughing
At the gazelle’s embrace of the lion.
عَجَبيmy wonder ياO قَومُpeople إِذwhen عَبَرَتpassed
بِعَبيرِthrough the fragrance الصُدغُthe temple-lock مِنهُfrom him يَديmy hand
I marvel, O people, when my hand passed
Through the fragrance of his temple-lock:
كَيفَhow لَمnot تُحرَقbe burned بِماby what وَقَدَتblazed
وَجَنَتاهُhis two cheeks فيهِماin them both عَضُديmy upper arm
How was my upper arm not burned by the blaze
Of his cheeks, as it lay between them?
