ما صاحِبُ المَرءِ مِن إِن زَلَّ عاقِبَهُ

ما صاحِبُ المَرءِ مِن إِن زَلَّ عاقِبَهُ

بَل صاحِبُ المَرءِ مَن يَعفو إِذا قَدَرا

بَل صاحِبُ المَرءِ مَن يَعفو إِذا قَدَرا

A person's friend is not one who punishes him if he slips;

A friend is not one who deserts when misfortune strikes

rather, his friend is one who pardons when he has the power.

But one who pardons when in power to punish

فَإِن أَرَدتَ وِصالاً لا يُكَدِّرُهُ

فَإِن أَرَدتَ وِصالاً لا يُكَدِّرُهُ

هَجرٌ فَكُن صافِياً لِلخِلِّ إِن كَدَرا

هَجرٌ فَكُن صافِياً لِلخِلِّ إِن كَدَرا

So if you desire a bond that is not clouded

If you desire a love that sorrow cannot mar

by estrangement, keep your heart clear toward your friend, even if his grows clouded.

Be forgiving if offended, though well able to injure
