أَخٌa friend زادَgrew مَعناهُhis self-importance فيin صَدِّهِhis aloofness
وَأَخرَجَهُand drove him التيهِconceit عَنbeyond حَدِّهِhis bounds
A friend whose self-importance grew in his aloofness,
and conceit drove him beyond his bounds.
أَذقناهُwe made him taste أَحلىthe sweetest عِتابٍreproach لَناof ours
فَذُقناso we tasted الأَمَرَّينِdouble bitterness مِنfrom صَدِّهِhis rejection
We let him taste our sweetest reproach,
so we tasted double bitterness from his rejection.
فَوَسَّختُso I soiled بِالهَجوwith satire آذانَهُhis ears
وَنَظَّفتُand I cleansed قَلبِيَmy heart مِنof وُدِّهِaffection for him
So I soiled his ears with satire,
and cleansed my heart of affection for him.
