You, O Khalil, have a place in hearts,

higher than the heaven that holds Kaywan.

No one has disagreed about you, as though

all people of understanding were your close friends.

All thoughts are one thought in devotion to you,

and all the tongues of those who know you are one tongue.

And one sees affectation in others; for you alone,

the private and the public are alike.

It is enough for you, among the communities, that you are the

patriot, with neither hatred nor rancor.

How wondrous its gathering of hearts in devotion—

a pen in your hand, enchanting and captivating!

And when it is drawn for battle, it is

surely the mightiest means with which you have aided homelands.

Far from matching your deadly prowess against foes

is he whose hands hold a keen sword and spearhead.

The literary gift bestowed upon you has been adorned

greatly by the beauty of your character.

And loyalty is your nature: you never fail a brother,

though the brothers of our age are betrayers.

By God, necks bear necklaces from you,

radiant ones, and ears bear pearls from you.

Had you come in the age of verse, never would

Dhubyan ever have won renown through its Nabighah.

And though those weighing you have passed you by, how many a youth

has risen on the scales since weighing less than you!

Or, were the world a priesthood of eloquence,

beside Ukaz, you would be the archbishop.
