    فَقَضَيتَ فَذا في البِلادِ فَريدا

    You lived peerless among men, unique;

and died unmatched in all lands, alone.

You strove all your life, then died in exile,

and became a martyr in every sense.

    ما غَيرَ ذَلِكَ مَطلَباً مَنشودا

    Your life was spent safeguarding Egypt for her people;

no other goal than that was sought.

You strove half your life throughout her lands,

through learning, and half in exile, a wanderer.

By God, you gave the trust its full due,

and spent on it wealth newly gained and inherited.

In sorrow for her you melted your heart; through that sorrow

you perished, searing the hearts of your kin.

You held nothing back in loving Egypt and her people—

no strength, nor any strenuous effort in that cause.

You did not begrudge leaving for her sake

a homeland and a lofty palace like al-Sadir,

    عَنها صَرَفَت وَعَيِّلاً وَوَليدا

    and pleasures and treasures you had inherited;

you were parted from them, and from family and a newborn,

whom you left a child; separation kept you long away,

so you were denied the sight of him as he came of age.

For Egypt's deliverance you left noble deeds,

bright deeds for which you kept vigil through black nights.

You were enthralled and stricken by love for her,

and so became the leader of her young men.

How often they called you wrong and opposed you! And everyone

who achieves as you did has always been envied,

until the years gave birth to truths

before which they fell, bowing and prostrate.

They learned that you had not been reckless,

but had looked far ahead from your very first glance.

They turned to your counsel, and you became—and this is among

    God's blessings—decisively vindicated.

You did not face death until all Egypt

was urging delegations to follow your example.

How greatly your eyes were gladdened when

everyone gathered around your raised banner!

Look, then, upon beloved Egypt, her parts

bound to one another like a twisted cord.

    She marches toward liberation, unafraid

of danger or of violent, annihilating death.

All of her has become Denshawai; but now

people are the hunted prey instead of pigeons.

Never—even if the mighty oppress, even if they tyrannize—

shall Egypt's free people become slaves.

However much the conquerors draw strength from their troops,

right is greater in strength and armies.

The age has now arrived whose sons

will bear no chains or shackles.

Then, Farid, hold to your certainty that

a day proclaiming deliverance stands ready.

Relief must surely come soon; then

Egypt will make for your entombed form.

And they will bring you glad tidings of deliverance beneath the soil:

'Rise and witness your promised day!'

Your memory will endure beside the Pyramids,

and your grave, like them, will remain much visited.

And there, tears will turn to gladness,

and your heartrending mourning will become a festival.
