O my eyes, do you weep blood so reluctantly?
O my two weeping eyes, is this how we agreed to preserve moral integrity?
Is this how we pledged to honor our bonds?
If all your darkness turned to flint upon seeing this righteous friend, you still would not have done him justice.

For long you yearned to see him, counting him the soul's bliss and comfort.
in mourning your friend, you would not have done him justice for what he was.

Now it is right that I weep profusely, for scalding tears are followed by youth.

Rather, I cry for the lamented one who died in Egypt—

I seek refuge in tears, to quench the blaze with them,
Glory donned attire from his hands, excellence mounted high in his shadow.
but only add to it, as though I were fanning a fire.
Poetry attained what had eluded Zuhair and what the generous one in his prime had missed.

Now it is fitting that I lavish the hottest tears;
Desire courted the furtive abode of merit until its pegs were smashed, its platitudes turned to patches.
indeed, coolness follows the heat of tears.
It heralded the praiseworthy sword—had it struck the epochs with the hand of auspiciousness, it would have left no nick.

A catastrophe that shook even the deaf rocks! So say: Did it split the firmament, or did the towering edifice crumble?

Had time's outcome made a man its peak, charging him with being this age's nonpareil, it would not have sinned.

If truth had a hand in those matters, virtue's case would have prevailed, not subject to reproach.

He wished only the best for his nation and wanted nothing for it but the guardianship of mighty protectors.

How oft have the ignorant's assumptions marred a matter, and how often has one knotted a skein in verse undone it!

Time has rarely birthed a lion like him, grazing the pastures of glory and dignity.
at Time's edge, by Fortune's hand, that edge would have been notched.
He is refined, no crookedness visible in his character. A companion whose affection knew no boredom.

The age's finest product—if a man swore of him
No literature has sprouted in our time, cultured or refined, but by a rain from his meanings, thriving and growing.
that he was this age's peerless one, he would not sin.
Neither the age of ignorance, nor the old-timer, nor the modern with him can claim a share.

Every prominent poet seeks a draft of his cup, that he may glean full flavor.

Had he come in some past time and been contemporary with wise Kindah, the latter would not have claimed what he claimed.

Or had he reached an age before love-struck Habib turned from singing, inhibited.
Time would not have burdened him with oppression, nor left him deprived.
He hunts down every fleeting notion in his poems—no verse of his but catches his prey.

Nay, no valor will bring good fortune as long as time remains more bitter than this draught.

No affliction touched you but your intention was pure, and he who blamed you for injustice was unjust.

Who will tend wonders, who will bestow favors, or
who will face battles when an assailant attacks?

Who will wield sharp swords, who will uphold noble deeds, or
who will shoulder burdens, now that their bond has snapped?
ياO يَومَday of مَحمودَMahmoud ماnot أَبقَيتَyou left مُحَمَّدَةًa praiseworthy quality
إِلّاexcept وَأَورَدتَهاand brought it فيat نَحبِهِhis death العَدَماnothingness
O day of Mahmoud's loss, you left no praiseworthy quality
without plunging it into nothingness at his passing.
تِلكَthose الخَلالُqualities فَهَلso will آتَsomeone coming يُجَدِّدَهاrenew them
أَوor هَلdo تَرىyou think أَمَلُthe hope of العَلياloftiness بِهاthrough them حُلُماa dream
Those were his qualities; will someone come to renew them,
or do you deem the hope of reaching such heights through them a dream?
هَيهاتَfar-fetched يُسعِدُهاsupport them شَهمٌa noble man يُتاحُis granted لَهاto them

فَالدَهرُfor Time أَلأَمُis baser مِنthan هَذاthis النَدىgenerosity شِيَماin character
Alas, far-fetched that a noble man should be granted to sustain them;
for Time is too base in nature for such generosity.
لَنwill not يَهتَديfind his way بَعدَafter مَحمودٍMahmoud دَليلٌa guide ثَناa mountain pass

After Mahmoud, no guide will find a mountain pass,
and you will not see this wound healed.
وَاللَهُby God ماnot عَجَبيmy wonder مِنat فوتِهِhis passing عَجَبيmy wonder
لِمِثلِهِat one like him كَيفَhow حَتّىuntil الآنَnow قَدhad سَلَّماremained safe
By God, I am not amazed at his passing; I am amazed
that one like him had survived until now.
وَطالَماand how often قُلتُI said إِذاwhen جادَbestowed generously الزَمانُTime بِهِhim

مَنwho عَلَّمَtaught الدَهرَTime هَذاthis الجودُbounty وَالكَرَماand generosity
How often I said, when Time bestowed him:
'Who taught Time such bounty and generosity?'
ياO حِليَةَornament of الشَرقِthe East أَضحىhas become بَعدَهاafter it عُطُلاًunadorned

O ornament of the East, left bare after your loss,
and Time's unique egg—Time is barren of any like it!
إِنif كانَit was لَمnot تَألُكَspare you الدُنايthe world مَعارِكَةًcombat

If the world spared no effort in battling you,
you are not the first free man to meet calamities.

وَمَنand whoever عَزاattributed لَكَto you مِنany ظُلمٍinjustice فَقَدhas indeed ظَلَماdone wrong
No trial of yours tainted an intention that was pure,
and whoever ascribed injustice to you did you wrong.

How many a seeker whose failure did not disgrace his striving,
and a commander whose defeat brought him no shame!
وَرُبَّand many a مُسديgiver of يَدٌa kindness يَلقىmeets البَلاءَaffliction بِهاthrough it

وَرُبَّand many a جانٍwrongdoer سَعيدٌfortunate بِالَّذيthrough what جَرَماhe committed
Many a giver of kindness meets affliction through it,
while many a wrongdoer prospers through his crime.
إِنَّindeed التَقاديرَthe decrees of fate إِنif أُجرَتsent sailing سَفائِنَهاtheir ships

Indeed, when the decrees of fate set their ships sailing,
they place the inexperienced beside the prudent.
لاmay not تُبعَدَنَّyou be banished وَلاnor يُبخَسbe diminished ثَناكَyour praise فَلَمfor you did not

May you never be far away, nor your praise diminished; you were never
driven except by refusal of oppression and noble pride.
وَاللَهُby God لَوif كُنتَyou were تَدريaware ماwhat بِناis within us كَمَداًof grief

لَكُنتَyou would be أَنتَyou لَناfor us الراثيthe mourner وَمَنand one who رَحَماshowed mercy
By God, if you knew the grief that weighs upon us,
you would be the one to mourn us and show us mercy.
لَيسَnot الَّذيthe one who جاوَرَdwells beside الديماسَthe underground tomb فيin نَكَدٍmisery

The dweller beside the crypt is not as wretched
as one whom sorrow and sickness drive toward it.

If the whole cord of a person's life
is a snare, the best cord is the one that breaks.

Go, then; the Guardian's greetings be upon you, so long as
the clouds' tears pour streaming upon your grave-dust.

Your death made every other calamity seem slight;
no loss now dismays me, however great.
