أَلاlo ياO بَنيsons of عُثمانِOsman حَسبِكُمenough for you بُشرىglad tidings
لَقَدindeed جادَbestowed generously رَبُّthe Lord of العَرشِthe Throne بِالنِعمَةِwith the blessing الكُبرىgreatest
Lo, O sons of Osman, glad tidings enough for you!
O sons of Othman, rejoice, for great favor has your Lord bestowed
The Lord of the Throne has indeed bestowed the greatest blessing.
You have attained the goal which mighty men before you failed to reach
وَقدand indeed فُزتُمyou attained ذاthis اليَومَday بِالغايَةِthe goal الَّتيwhich
عَلَيهاfor it رِجالٌmen قَدalready قَضواperished دونَكُمbefore you قَهراunder oppression
Today you have attained the goal for which
Good fortune came upon you suddenly, dispersing woeful plights
men before you perished under oppression.
God's promise was fulfilled, ease succeeding hardship in its flight
أَطَلتُdawned (read أطلّت) عَلَيكُمupon you بَغتَةًsuddenly شَرَّدَfugitive (read شُرَّد) المُنىhopes
تَحَقَّقَcame to pass بَعثُsending اللَهِGod مَعَwith عُسرِهِHis hardship اليُسراease
Fugitive hopes suddenly dawned upon you;
Despair's veil had stood between, but now is torn away
God's sending ease alongside His hardship has come to pass.
How many a corpse will the Judge raise from its slumbering clay!
أَتَتit came وَحِجابُand the veil of اليَأسِdespair قَدalready حالَstood دونَهاin its way
كَمhow often يَنشُرُresurrects الدِيانَthe Judge مِنthose who سَكَنِdwelt in القَبراthe grave
It came, though the veil of despair had stood in its way.
How far astray were your imaginings! "We are doomed," you would say
How often the Judge resurrects those who dwelt in the grave!
Yet without any pact, God changed your state, night transmuted into day
وَكَمand how often قَدindeed أَسأَتُمyou thought ill مِنof ظُنونٍsuspicions وَقُلتُمand you said
مَضَيناwe are finished وَبَعضَand some الظَنَّsuspicion يَحتَقِبُcarries الوَزَراthe burden of sin
And how often you harbored ill suspicions and said,
So you might find compassion in the morn, and thanks in memory's ray
“We are finished!” Yet some suspicion carries a burden of sin.
Knowing none but Allah is Lord, beside Whom none can hurt or profit one
فَعَنso, from غَيرِother than وَعدٍa promise بَدَّلَchanged اللَهُGod حالَكُمyour condition
لِتَضحىso it may become لَكُمfor you رَحمىmercy وَتَغدوand become لَكُمfor you ذِكرىa reminder
So, without any promise, God changed your lot,
He willed the Orient's stumbling should by His mantle be o'errun
that it might be mercy for you and become a reminder to you,
And inspired our Caliph, whose name is "Shadow," though dust-bound flesh may tire
وَيَعلَمُand one may know أَنَّthat اللَهَGod لاno رَبَّLord غَيرَهُother than Him
وَلَيسَand there is not سِواهُanyone besides Him يَملِكُcontrols النَفعَbenefit وَالضُرّاand harm
and one may know that there is no Lord but God,
To scatter largesse on mankind, as rain the thirsting earth entire
and none but He controls benefit and harm.
By his grace you have found new life, while in some breasts envy rankles
أَرادَHe willed تَلافيto rescue الشَرقَthe East مِنfrom عَثَراتِهِits stumbles
فَأَلقىso He cast عَلَيهِover it مِنof عِنايَتِهِHis care سَتراa covering
He willed to rescue the East from its stumbles,
His peace and safety came to you, while neighbors fled with bloodied ankles
so He cast over it a covering of His care.
For you they feared the worst, but in other lands how cheap the captive throng!
وَأَلهَمَand He inspired مَولاناour lord الخَليفَةَthe Caliph ظِلُّهُhis shadow
إِذاwhen مالَinclines نَحوَtoward التُربِdust صَيَّرَهُturns it into تِبراraw gold
And He inspired our lord the Caliph, whose shadow,
Can one so gracious, fatherly, mean us any harm or wrong?
when it inclines toward dust, turns it to gold.
A leader each day showing the East his noble obligation
فَنِلتُمso you gained بِنُعماهُthrough his favor حَياةًa life جَديدَةًnew
غَدَتhas come to be بِنُفوسٍwith lives عِندَamong غَيرِكُمothers than you تَشرىbought
Thus, through his favor, you gained a new life,
An age of troubles found in him a rock against temptation
which other peoples have come to buy with their lives.
He tamed authority's caprice, curbing it with discretion wise
سَلاماًpeace وَبَرداًand coolness نِلتُموهاyou gained it بِلُطفِهِthrough his kindness
وَجيرانُكُمand your neighbors بِالسَيفَby the sword هاماتِهِمtheir heads تَفرىare cleft
In peace and coolness you gained it through his kindness,
Through governance his clouds pour down as rain in distant skies
while your neighbors' heads are cleft by the sword.
Had he achieved naught else, the Road by which the nations thrive
بِكُمwith you ظَنُّspared (likely ضنّ) إِشفاقاًout of compassion وَفيand in أَرضِthe land of غَيرِهِanother than him
فَماthen how أَكثَرَnumerous القَتلىthe slain وَماand how أَرخَصَcheap الأَسرىthe captives
He spared you out of compassion; but in another's land—
Would have sufficed, though gloried by Abu'l-Zahra's voice alive
how numerous the slain, and how cheap the captives!
He who showered such boons on men, like hottest summer rain impearling
وَحاشاand far be it from أَباًa father بَرَّdevoted in الأُبُوَّةِfatherhood مِثلُهُlike him
يُريدُhe wishes بِناfor us ضَيماًinjustice وَيُرهِقُناand burdens us with عَسراhardship
Far be it from so devoted a father as he
A people sunk in darkened night by him saw bright days unfurling
to wish us injustice and burden us with hardship.
Glad tidings in a people's ears! Once drunk, now intoxication past
إِمامٌa leader لَهُfor him فيin كُلِّevery يَومٍday عَوارِفُfavors
عَلىupon الشَرقِthe East وَالإِسلامِand Islam لاnot نَقبَلُwe accept الحَصراa limiting count
A leader whose favors come every day
Lightning brought us the great news and poured the clouds in joy at last
to the East and Islam; we admit no limit to their number.
Blest the time, blest the day when such great fortune came to bless us
تَلقاهُconfronted him عَصرٌan age بِالخُطوبِwith calamities فَلَمyet not يَزَلdid he cease
يُكافِحُhe battles فيthrough آرائِهِhis counsels وَحدَهُhe alone العَصراthe age
An age confronted him with calamities, yet he never ceased
Life renewed, forget now the grievous past's distress and hopelessness
to battle the age alone through his counsels.
Thanks, our brothers steadfast! In those grim hours firm and dutiful
أَذَلَّhumbled عِنادَthe obstinacy of النائِباتِcalamities فَأَسلَسَتso they grew docile
وَأَصبَحَand he came to بِالتَدبيرِby planning يَقتادُهاlead them قَسراby force
He humbled calamities' obstinacy, and they grew docile,
Value their nobility, reward their loyalty bountiful!
and by planning he came to drive them by force.
Long you stood, long you gazed out helpless from the river's edge
لَناfor us مِنfrom نَداهُhis bounty الجَمُّabundant فيin كُلِّevery حادِثٍcrisis

For us, from his abundant bounty, in every crisis,
Do not dwell on days now gone, for sweeter draughts today we pledge
are clouds across the lands that resemble showers of rain.
Long was night's oblivious gloom, but dawn has lit the revels anew
وَلَوand even if لَمnot يَكُنthere were إِلّاexcept الطَريقُthe road الَّذيwhich بِهِby it

Even if there were nothing but the road by which
No excuses left for failing, like one who fasted not when due
the lattice of Taha, father of al-Zahra, came within reach,
Give your lives for the Commander of the Faithful and your pride
لَكانَit would be لَعَمريby my life كافِياًsufficient فيfor ثَنائِهِpraising him

it would, by my life, suffice to praise him
Kinship with Uthman will lift you ever to glory's side
and to win him enduring glory and reward.
A new golden age will come through his munificence sublime
لَقضدindeed (likely لقد) مَنَّbestowed بِالنُعمىwith the blessing الَّتيwhose جاءَcame وَقعُهاits impact

عَلىupon الخَلقِmankind وَقعُthe impact of الماءِwater مِنupon كَبِدٍa liver حَرّىparched
He indeed bestowed the blessing whose arrival
hands outstretched to bless your brows through all advancing time
was to mankind like water to a parched liver.
Prepare for the coming days - the future is here, fresh and green!

He has sanctioned consultation - take counsel, should you lead
through it, its dark days, replacing them with white nights.

Clouds of tears streamed down for it, out of joy.

And a day on which we received its glad tidings is worth a lifetime.

during that adversity showed such steadfast patience.

on a shore with no means of crossing.

Do not recall that time which has passed,
for today's sweetness has made amends for the bitterness of what passed.

but whoever witnessed dawn has forgotten the darkness.

“And consult them in the matter,” if you bear authority.
