I ask my tears: “Have you come to answer me?”

If you will, quench my burning anguish and my blaze.

Yet far is a downpour from overcoming the fire,

while the wind of calamities has announced its onset.

If al-Khansa wept for Sakhr, then surely

the very rock has spent the night weeping at my long lament.

They tell me, “Be patient!” Yet I have melted with anguish,

and it is no wonder that one like me should melt in sorrow.

Do I think my heart is iron? Even if it is,

how many sparks there are that can melt iron!

And they said, “Come, be calm; take comfort from those gone before,

for a bereaved man who despairs is not acting rightly.”

So I said, “Leave me to sorrow; of no avail are

an orator’s words beside the words of calamities.”

My station in love and fidelity is too exalted

for diversion or forgetting after a beloved’s loss.

And many a lover has come to forget his beloved—

behold, those are bodies without hearts!

Does death bring a calamity every day

that sends every torrent flowing from the eyelids?

Death’s treachery singled us out with a blow

whose equal Time has refused to bring.

Today we were bereaved of Abd al-Qadir, just when

every discerning person’s hopes had come to rest on him.

He fell, a star whose setting left

all the corners of the eyes brimming with tears.

He fell, a star, perfect as the full moon, though it had

a brief course from rising to setting.

Then say what anguish burns within the breast

over so tender a branch lying in the dust!

Though he had not lived beyond sixteen years,

he had surpassed the gray-haired in understanding.

I read writings of his shortly before news of his death,

the like of which would make any man of letters proud.

The wretchedness of the days compels me to say it:

And does the world favor the life of a noble man?

And he was one who, had he lived, would have revived his forefathers,

and become the very embodiment of bounty in the Nile Valley.

A cherished one reared by Egypt’s throne, he met

the death of one far from home, a stranger abroad—

one of the great Alawites, whose bounty extends

to everyone, both far from them and near.

Islam looks to them with hope in every crisis,

and on every trying day that time brings.

Justice has decreed that in all calamities

we bear a share of their sorrows.

I prayed for their long lives, as a means

to aid their communities and peoples,

and to uplift homelands and bring glory to the faith,

and to humble spiteful foes and watchful adversaries.
