He who fills the eyes with beauty is none other

Than he who fills hearts with perfection.

And love’s brother, possessed of passion, is the one whom

The lion, in his love, has taken for a gazelle.

O beauty, whose qualities I have loved,

I hope for union with none but them.

May God increase your eminence—and my certainty

Of perfection whenever I behold the crescent moon.

I have gathered in you, O Jamal, qualities

From which praise seeks the impossible.

Or have you not that resolve, which never turned

On any day without making light of mountains?

Your deed precedes your words, when

    Among humankind words precede deeds.

O son of him who made all the eminent fall short

Of seeing us as equals to his own person.

Son of the age’s axis in justice, without

Qualification—time has never shown his equal in any circumstance.

    أَنا ما إِن أُطيقُ هَذا المَجالا

    I seek no description of the state you are in;

I simply cannot take on this arena.

No, nor thanks for what I sincerely bestowed of

Affection on a friend whom you see has sworn by your name.

And an age keeps singing of it:

    “Thus, thus—or else, no, no!”
