Has a full moon appeared, or a dazzling radiance?
Is it the radiant dawn that appeared, or glowing brightness?
And has perfume wafted, or fragrant praise?
Is it sweet-scented perfume that flowed, or fragrant breeze?
أَمor اِنبَلَجَتdawned غُرَّةَthe radiant brow العيدِof the feast حَتّىso that

Or has the feast's radiant brow dawned, so that
As if the prime of Eid has shone with radiance
Its unveiled face has shone proudly with it?
So his travelling face prides itself with it
وَفَتقٌand an opening فيهِwithin it نَوافِجُmusk-pods مَدحٍof praise

And praise's musk-pods have burst open within it,
Openings in it, of sincere praises
With the heady fragrance of gifts spreading through it.
Aromatic gifts with it overflowing

هُمومَthe cares الوَرىof humankind بِشَرِّهِwith its cheer الظاهِرُmanifest
Then rejoice in it—a feast of good fortune that has dispelled
With it, Eid of blessings was delightful
Humankind's cares with its manifest cheer.
Worries of people with its evil vanished
وَأَنساهُمُand made them forget اليَومَtoday نُعماهُits blessings ماwhat

And today its blessings made them forget what
And forgot the day’s blessings what
Their bygone yesterday had made them suffer.
Distressed them yesterday fading away
فَلاso not الخَلقَthe people فيin دَهرِهِمtheir age ضاجِرونَweary

وَلاand not الدَهرُTime فيtoward خَلقِهِits creatures جائِرُunjust

So people are not weary of their age,
So neither are creatures noisy in their time
Nor is Time unjust toward its creatures.
Nor is time unjust to its creatures

Has Time, then, become heedless at the feast, or
Did time neglect during Eid or
Pretended to forget that it is a ravager?
Disregarded that it is destructive?

Noble deeds that have delighted souls,
Praiseworthy achievements with them the souls prospered
All alike, and gladdened the beholder's eye.
Together and the onlooker felt close with them

Through them the army of cares was scattered,
The army of worries with them scattered
In a defeat no one could repair.
At the destruction of what has no mender

Humankind's joy raided it,
It attacked the people’s cheer
And Sa'd al-Su'ud is its champion.
And the luck of fortune supported it

And it is but a shake of a lance-shaft,
And nothing but a worker’s effort
And it is but the strength of a lean steed.
And nothing but a striver’s favor

Where, then, is the ravenous scourge with which
So where is the greedy disaster that
Wicked Time threatens us?
Threatens us, the villainous time?

If it comes to its predecessor’s
Of its lands, while a bygone age struck on its behalf,
Lands and overwhelms it fading away

That which protected him now comes to him
It has wrought, and the present bows before it.
And cares for him attending

Hear me—by lofty honors and gleaming spearpoints:
Beware, the heights and whiteness of heights
If overpowering calamity sets itself against us,
If the powerful event poses as hostile

We are not—we are not—among those who fear,
We are not, we are not, of those who are cautious
When the brave man is wary of calamity.
When the cautious of events take caution

And I, I belong to a people, when
We boast, no one among humankind can boast.
We pride, none in the world prides more

We confront the angels everyday with what
The pure lord has bestowed upon it through us:
Gifted us the Pure Master

And no one is ungrateful for his blessings.

Great in gifts, his bounty is abundant.
His hopes long, his length abundant

While every other praise falls short

Though I am the eloquent orator, the poet.
